Bridging the Gap: Blended Courses in the Business Discipline

Christine Mooney is an Assistant Professor at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York.  Prof. Mooney is also an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of New York.  She has been a member of the faculty at QCC for over ten years teaching a variety of courses in the Business Management area.  She also, has served as a faculty mentor of the QCC Fed Challenge Team since the Fall of 2004.  She and her colleague have successfully coached their team to two National Community College Finals.  Professor Mooney has been recognized for her outstanding work in the field of Elder law where she is frequently appointed by the Court to serve as a guardian to incapacitated individuals.  Professor Mooney holds a B.A. and an M.A. from Queens College of the City University of New York.  She received her law degree with honors from New York Law School and is a member of the New York State Bar.

Professor Leslie Francis has taught Business Law and Business Management at Queensborough Community College, located in Queens, New York, for four years. Prior to coming to Queensborough, he was an adjunct professor at York College, also located in Queens, New York, for ten years where he taught Business Law.  Both colleges are part of the City University of New York.  In addition to teaching, Professor Francis is one of the faculty advisors to the school’s mock trial team.  The team remains the only community college in the Eastern Regional competition.

Professor Francis is currently on the Curriculum Committee for a new early college/high school program to begin in the Fall of 2014. The program is a partnership between Queensborough Community College, NYC Department of Education and SAP AG, a German multinational software corporation. Through a series of grants from New York State, New York City Department of Education and SAP AG, the students of B-Tech will receive a free Associates degree from Queensborough Community College in either Computer Information Systems or Internet Technology and a “first-in-line” opportunity to work for SAP AG or one of its many global partners.

Professor Francis is also an attorney admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Connecticut and he is also admitted in the federal court of the United States for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, as well as the United States Bankruptcy Court.  He received his J.D. degree from St. John’s University School of Law and maintained his own law office for over twenty years. He is also a member of the quasi-judicial Board of Zoning Appeals for the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island.

Copyright and Patent Education: Promoting Student Success by Developing Lifelong Skills

Dr. Farzaneh Razzaghi has been serving as the Dean of library at the University of Texas- Pan American since 2007. She received her Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies from Texas Woman’s University. She obtained several management training certificates including one on “Women Executive Education” from Harvard University, and “Management Development” from Miami University in Oxford Ohio.

She is currently chairing the University of Texas System Library Advisory Board, ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) Research Committee of the Distance Learning Section, and serving as a Board member of McAllen Public Library. Co-authored several proposals for Grants from Texas State Library, NEH and NSF. Member of TexShare Advisory Board, and served as a grant reviewer for Texas State Library and TexShare Continuing Education Committee.

He is interested in such areas as Topological Quantum Field Theory and Recreational Mathematics. He has recently become very interested in Mathematics Education. He has presented at numerous international and national conferences. He is regularly publishing articles focusing both on pure mathematics and mathematics education in various peer reviewed journals. Dr. Ruslan Flek received his B.S. in Mathematics from Hunter College of CUNY and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center.  While completing his doctoral work he served as an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College and a math learning center supervisor.  He received his Ph.D. in 2009, and is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Hostos Community College (CUNY). His pure mathematical interests and areas of expertise include Complex Analysis, Complex Dynamics, General Dynamical Systems and Hyperbolic Geometry.  His broader research interests include Mathematics Education, Curriculum Development and the Psychology of Quantitative Reasoning.  He remains active in the above areas of research through publications, national presentations and larger collaborative projects, especially in the area of mathematics pedagogy.

Infusing Technology to Boost Competition: A Practical Approach

Vice President of Student Affairs Naydeen González-De Jesús has worked in student services on the community college level for the past decade. She joined Bergen Community College in January 2013 after serving as Burlington County College’s associate dean since 2009. She holds a doctorate in industrial organizational psychology from Northcentral University. Recently, Dr. Gonzalez-De Jesus established a Military and Veterans Affairs Center, a One-Stop Enrollment Services Center, an Admissions Welcome Center, and an improved enrollment management strategy that has yielded recent increases in headcount and credit enrollment. She serves as Institutional Representative for the NJ Women’s Network in Higher Education. Dr. Gonzalez-De Jesus is a National Community College Hispanic Council Fellow, and a member of the National Council on Black American Affairs, a member organization of the American Association of Community Colleges. Her research interests include but are not limited to leadership development, organizational psychology, student success, persistence and retention, and process evaluation and improvement. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian.

Denise A. Longoria is an assistant professor of social work at The University of Texas-Pan American.  She holds an MSSW from The University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University.  Before joining The University of Texas – Pan American, she was a faculty member at Texas A & M International University.  She has been a social worker for over twenty years, and an academician for fourteen.   Her areas of interest and expertise include social work practice, family violence issues, and social work education.    In addition to teaching social work courses, Dr. Longoria is responsible for recruitment and advising of Laredo students enrolled in the distance education program.  Dr. Longoria maintains a small private practice where she provides individual and couples’ therapy.  She also serves as a board member of two non-profit agencies in Laredo, Texas.

Breaking with Tradition: Video Games as an Alternative Tool for ESL Instruction in Puerto Rico’s Public Schools.

Kenneth Horowitz has been teaching English in Puerto Rico for over 15 years at both the secondary level and in higher education. With extensive linguistic training in English as a second language (ESL) he has taught at the several local universities. Horowitz has also participated in several federal proposals, such as Title V where he implemented technology into ESL classrooms, and TRIO Student Support Services, where he offers tutoring and guidance to students. Currently, he is teaching at Antillean Adventist University, where he has taught since 2008 and Pontifical Catholic University, Mayagüez, where he has taught since 2002. Horowitz is also in the dissertation stage of his Ed.D in Education in English as a Second Language (ESL). Dr. Nieves Angulo is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department and the Coordinator of the Engineering Program. She has a B.A. and M.A. in Mathematics from Hunter College, and a M.S and Ed.D in Mathematics Education from Columbia University. She served as the Deputy Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2001 to 2004. She has also been a member of the Center for Mathematics in America’s Cities at the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Angulo has worked in the development and the implementation of the Dual/Joint Engineering Programs with CCNY since 2002. Furthermore, many joint projects with other senior colleges including NY City Tech has resulted in securing different grants to help develop and advance the engineering field at the college. For example: the NSF (2005) “Bridges to Engineering Success for Transfers”, a NASA (2010) “Achieving Proficiency in Engineering Research and STEM Education Through NASA Initiatives”-(CIPAIR), and a US DoE (2011) “The Alliance For Continuous Innovative Learning Environments in STEM” (CILES). These grants have made possible many activities for the engineering students at HCC such as (i) NASA Day at Hostos on which many NASA scientists from Goddard, Glenn, and Marshall have being invited to the college, (ii) research internships for STEM students during the summer months, (iii) participation of Hostos’ students in the CCNY summer program called Fast Transfer Retention Academic at CCNY (Fast TRACC) which helps students to transfer from community colleges to senior colleges, and (iv) establishing Advanced Training for Engineering Students  which have been a month long workshop to give students the opportunity to work with faculty members to advance in math, physics and chemistry. Furthermore, Dr. Angulo established the engineering club in 2006, which has served as the pivot point for all engineering activities at the college. Dr. Angulo has mentored many students who were awarded internships to Brookhaven National Labs and NASA as a result.

Dr. Vanessa Irizarry Muñoz has a Ph. D. in Teaching and Learning from New York University and an M.A in Curriculum Development from Michigan State University. Juan Meléndez-Alicea is a full professor of the Department of Art, Technology and Innovation at the College of Education in the Rio Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, and a consultant with the Ana G. Méndez University-Virtual Campus. He did his BA and MA at Albany State (New York), his doctorate at the Interamerican University (Puerto Rico) and his advanced studies at the University of Cambridge (England). He is a member of the Board Directors of the Puerto Rican Society of Evaluators.

Dr. Meléndez started with technology in education in 1975, and with distance education in 1985 in a project with the University of the Virgin Islands. He published his first article on distance education in 1990, and published a book on the subject in 1999, and has published chapters in several Latin American books. He has presented on the topic of distance education in Argentina, Aruba , Barbados, Brazil, Colombia , Cuba , Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama and Thailand and United States.

Dr. Díaz currently is a full tenured professor with 32 years of professional and academic experience.  Prior to joining The University of Texas – Pan American as department chair, he served as Director of a Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at Arlington and as Vice-President of Student Affairs at a university in Puerto Rico.  He has been a member of the graduate faculty at four different universities.  He is very active in the areas of grant writing, research, publications and presentations at professional and academic conferences.  His areas of teaching and research expertise include:  social welfare policy, research, diversity and community socio-economic development.  He moved to the United States mainland in 1979 following the completion of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Puerto Rico.  He received a Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University in 1981 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1995. Dr. Diana Rivera is the Executive Assistant of the Chancellor at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus. She is also a part time professor of online courses of the Business Administration Academic Department. She has worked for that university for the past twenty-seven years.

She completed her doctoral degree at Nova Southeastern University of Florida (2011) in Instructional Technology and Distance Education. She also has a master degree in Finance and Human Resources from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, San German Campus, and her bachelor from the same university in the area of Accounting. Dr. Rivera started with online learning in 2001 when she designed her first course of Managerial Finance, course that she has been teaching ever since. In 2010 she also designed another online course International Financial Management for the graduate program of the school.

The author’s concern for the issues related to dropout and retention arose during their teaching of online courses. Dr. Rivera decided to be a distance student, choosing this mode of study for her doctoral degree. She believes that through his experience as a distance student, you can visualize better the position of that population.

Reflection and Metacognition in First Year Experience at Queensborough Community College

Dr. Jean Darcy is Associate Professor in the English Department at Queensborough Community College which funded her participation in three grants that are fundamental in forming this project: In “Learning to Look” at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center where faculty learned how to access and incorporate into lesson plans all the digital artifacts now circulated on the web by museums, government agencies, and universities. At the Georgetown University “Crossroads” project faculty learned how to form interdisciplinary groups to provide students with active learning projects using technology. At the “Making Connections” institute at La Guardia Community College faculty learned how to use the ePortfolio platform as a student learning center.  Founding Director of the Student Interdisciplinary Group at Queensborough, which comprises over forty faculty members, the group has done metacognitive research on over 3,000 students.  Jean won an Innovation of the Year award for “The Student Wiki Interdisciplinary Group” by League of Innovations, 2011; AACU LEAP National Toolkit Model SWIG January, 2011; and was an AACU Roadmap Participant, San Francisco, January, 2011. She won a Challenge Grant award at Queensborough in 2009.

Summer Faculty Immersion: A Program with the Potential to Transform Engineering Education

Dr. Morales has been an engineering professor at Universidad del Turabo since 1995.  He has also held several administrative posts, including ABET Coordinator for the School of Engineering.  In this post he coordinated the efforts that resulted in the first ABET accreditations of all the existing bachelor programs in engineering, including the creation and implementation of an outcomes assessment program that engages 100% of the faculty.  Dr. Morales has been the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department since 2003.  Most recently he co-authored the proposal to establish a Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering with specializations in Renewable Energy, and in Aerospace Engineering.  The master’s program is set to open in August 2012.  The main objective of this first engineering master’s program at Universidad del Turabo is to transition from a teaching program to a teaching-and-research program.  Dr. Morales recently won a $4.34 million grant from the US Department of Education which will fund a faculty development program that has the potential to transform the manner in which engineering education is taught.  Dr. Morales has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University; an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, MA; and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.  Prior to joining Universidad del Turabo, Dr. Morales worked seven years in industry, including five years with the General Electric Company in Niskayuna, NY (KAPL) where he worked in the mechanical design of a new-concept steam generator.

She also has a Master degree in Education Psychology from Columbia University, Teachers College, in New York. Her Bachelor degree was earned at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Her school days were at Public school system of Puerto Rico, which inspire her to engage in the educational process optimization, with emphasis on how technology can contribute to the positive transformation of these processes.

Dr. Ojeda worked with other colleagues on the creation of the first graduate program in Instructional Systems and Educational Technology in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, which was officially established in 1985. She has been President of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology Puerto Rico (ACTE-PR), is a member of the Board of Directors of the Instituto Puertorriqueño para la Paz (Puerto Rican Institute for Peace), member of the Board of Directors of Advancer Local Development, Director of the Department of Education, Graduate Program Coordinator and Director of several federally funded projects related to the integration of technology to educational transformation processes.

She has also been an excellent resource as a consultant in educational program evaluation,program design, instructional design, test development, systems development and
testing program and management audit of tests for the Educational Testing Service. Prepared questions and chaired the Comité de Competencias Profesionales (Committee on Professional Competencies) for the first teacher certification exam administered by the College Board of Puerto Rico. Dr. Ojeda Ayala has also developed several
instructional designs and research for the industry. Research interests are oriented towards the study of cognitive processes mediated by technology and virtual learning environments.

Michele Cuomo was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York in 2010, after a two year appointment as Assistant Dean following a year spent in the Office of Academic Affairs as a Faculty Fellow. She became a member of the Queensborough Community College faculty in the Fall of 2003, and was promoted to the rank of associate professor in the department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts five years later.

Previous positions included of Head of Acting at The University of Mississippi and Interim Head of Acting at The University of Georgia, where she was also a member of the select Graduate Faculty.

Michele Cuomo earned the B.A. degree in English at the College of New Rochelle, and the M.F.A. degree in Acting at The Ohio State University. She attended the Harvard Institute for Higher Education’s Management Development Program in 2008. She is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a Certified Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and an Experienced Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance. She is a board member of the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association after year of service as an officer. She received one of the first Emerging Leaders Awards from the American Association of University Administrators and an award for Teaching and Technology at the Hispanic Educational Telecommunications Best Practices Conference, both in 2010.

Michele has served as the Principal Investigator for the MDRC Learning Communities Study, as well as the project director for the Queensborough NEA Big Read grant. Leading the operations of the Freshman Academies has focused her inquiry into high impact practices for student success, and she participates as a faculty member in the Student Interdisciplinary Wiki Project, which incorporates global and diversity learning in a virtual learning community using an Epsilen platform. She continues to pursue creative research as a theatrical director and playwright, with most recent performances of her work at the Joyce Soho Theatre and the Theatre for the New City.

Claire W. Wladis is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.  Her research includes both mathematics and mathematics education research.  She has a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University, an M.S. in mathematical sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York.

Dr. Wladis has published several articles in geometric group theory as well as mathematics education and is currently focusing on educational research projects on online learning, mathematics remediation, and cooperative learning techniques.  She has been teaching online since 2004, and has developed several online courses, including one of the core requirements for the City University of New York Online Baccalaureate program.

Alyse C. Beatrice Mendez Newman is Professor of English at the University of Texas-Pan American (Edinburg, TX)—which she thinks is the best job in the universe.  She regularly teaches first year writing courses and also works with preservice English Language Arts teachers in Children’s Literature and Writing Methods classes. She has a life-time Texas teaching certificate in secondary English and Journalism and has taught in local school districts in innovative, collaborative projects that placed college professors in high school classrooms.

She has a book with Pearson/Allyn and Bacon titled English Teacher Certification Exams in Texas, a study guide for the state of Texas English Teacher Certification exams. She has written articles on teaching writing at a Hispanic Serving Institution, on teaching the works of local writers Viola Canales and Rene Saldana, and on teaching writing at the Writing Center.

Most recently, in addition to her publication in the HETS Online Journal, Dr. Newman also has an article on funds of knowledge and the teaching of writing forthcoming in the National Council of Teachers of English journal, Voices from the Middle.  Dr. Newman is very active in NCTE, serving on several of the organization’s key committees.  Additionally, she works extensively with her local public school colleagues in creating innovative, student-centered pedagogy for improving young students’ writing.

Dr. Juan Meléndez is a professor in the Department of Art, Technology and Innovation, Faculty of Education at the Rio Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). He is also the Resident Professor of Technology and Education of the campus, at its Center for Academic Excellence.

Dr. Meléndez started with distance learning in 1985 on a project with the University of the Virgin Islands. His first article on the subject was published in 1990. Also a book on distance education was published in 1999, and chapters in several Latin American books as well. The last chapter was published in the book El aseguramiento de la calidad en la educación virtual in June 2011.

He completed his advanced studies at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) in 2011, in the area of ​​research and evaluation. Their study was a meta-evaluation of distance learning programs in Puerto Rico.He is Advisor of the Distance Education Program at the UPR and for the University of Aruba and the the Virtual Campus of the Ana G. Méndez University System.  In addition, is the Coordinator of the Center for Educational Innovation of the Faculty of this Campus. There he developed policies and procedures of cataloging processes. Also worked providing research support to library users.

Dr. Jean Darcy is Associate Professor in the English Department at Queensborough Community College which funded her participation in three grants that are fundamental in forming this project: In “Learning to Look” at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center faculty learned how to access and incorporate into lesson plans all the digital artifacts now circulated on the web by museums, government agencies, and universities. At the Georgetown University “Crossroads” project faculty learned how to form interdisciplinary groups to provide students with active learning projects using technology. At the “Making Connections” institute at La Guardia Community College faculty learned how to use the ePortfolio platform at a student learning center.

William Jefferson is an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Learning Technologies at Kutztown University. He is responsible for designing and delivering faculty workshops on a wide variety of educational tools, including online survey tools, learning management systems, Web 2.0 applications, and audio and video-based multimedia applications. He holds Master degrees in Educational Technology and Library Science. He has worked in the instructional technology field for nearly twenty years, and has published a variety of articles about teaching and learning using classroom technologies, including several classroom clicker system articles.

Kathleen Hartman is a Professor in the Advising Center for Undeclared Students at Kutztown University. She earned a doctorate in education from Lehigh University and has taught writing courses, education courses, and first-year seminars utilizing technology to engage students. She received national and regional outstanding advising awards in 2007 from NACADA (National Academic Advising Association). She has published several articles and has presented at national and international conferences on first-year students and college success. She is the author of 35 Ways to Discover a Major, 2nd ed. and the co-author of Investing in Your College Education, 2nd ed. (both published by Cengage Learning, 2010).

Dr. Vera Brancato is a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Academic Advisement at Kutztown University. She is also a faculty advisor and Director of the Advising Center for Undeclared Students which supports the University’s mission through its commitment to the success of undeclared students, preparing them to meet lifelong career challenges and responsibilities. As the Director, she oversees the development and implementation of programs, services, and resources for undeclared students. She is a member of NACADA (National Academic Advising Association). She previously served as the Director of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching at Kutztown University. As the Director, she coordinated new faculty orientation programs and organized professional development workshops and meetings focused on the teaching-learning process and incorporating technology in the classroom. She completed her Doctorate in Higher Education, Administration and Leadership from Widener University and has over 30 years of experience in higher education. She is an author of several articles, book chapters, and textbooks and has presented at numerous regional, national and international conferences.
