HETS representation as an At Large organization during ICANN’s 50th meeting in London.

IcannHETS Executive Director, Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo participated along with more than 3,300 people from around the world of the ICANN’s 50th meeting in London, making it the largest in the organization’s history. HETS was certified as an At Large organization on year 2013, and have been actively participating of conference calls and webinars to get involved on ICANN initiatives.

Election of new HETS Board of Officers took place during the Summer Board Meeting hosted by Lehman College and it’s President, Dr. Ricardo Fernández.

President of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Manuel Fernós, Esq., was reelected as HETS Chairman during the annual summer Board Meeting celebrated at Lehman College, NY on June 19-20, 2014. Collaborating with Fernós as HETS Board of Officers will be Dr. Gloria Baquero, President of National University College elected as First Vice Chair; Dr. Carlos Vargas, Interim President from Kutztown University, reelected as Second Vice Chair, and President of the Ana G. Méndez University System, Dr. José F. Méndez elected as the new Treasurer

Summer Board Meeting closes the second year of HETS Strategic Plan.

Boardmembers-June2014Celebrating our 20th anniversary and with an outstanding attendance of 25 presidents and representatives from our current 41 institutional members; HETS celebrated its summer Board Meeting on June 19 and 20, 2014 in New York. This meeting was hosted by Lehman College. The Board meeting closes the academic year 2013-2014 with positive report on our second year of Strategic plan results, and envisioning numerous new projects for next academic year, including the election of the new Board Officers.

HETS promueve proyecto de transporte eco-amigable para celebrar el Mes del Planeta Tierra.

San Juan, Puerto Rico Demostrando su compromiso con el medio ambiente, HETS anuncia su apoyo al proyecto Coopiloto, la primera iniciativa de transporte compartido (carpooling) en Puerto Rico, con el fin de reducir la huella ecológica de los estudiantes y sus universidades miembros.

Para conmemorar el Mes del Planeta Tierra, HETS toma acción y promueve la dinámica de compartir carro entre los estudiantes a través del proyecto Coopiloto, una iniciativa sin fines de lucro que busca mejorar la movilidad ciudadana y convertirse en una alternativa de transporte económica, eficiente, entretenida y ecológica en CoopilotoPuerto Rico.

El portal www.coopiloto.net es la única plataforma virtual gratuita para compartir carro en la isla, una forma moderna y segura de pedir pon por Internet, lanzada en enero de 2014. La misión de Coopiloto es conectar conductores (con carro y asientos vacíos) y pasajeros (buscando pon) que viajan las mismas rutas para que compartan carro y ahorren. Al compartir carro, las personas se dividen los costos del viaje (gasolina, peaje, estacionamiento), siendo un beneficio económico para todos. La idea del proyecto es conectar a estudiantes de la misma universidad a través Coopiloto para que hagan carpooling y aumentar así el acceso a la educación en el país.

La encomienda de HETS y Coopiloto es proporcionar una alternativa de transporte a estudiantes sin auto propio para que tengan la posibilidad de llegar a la universidad cogiendo pon de forma segura con otros estudiantes. También la iniciativa busca ayudar a que los estudiantes con carro reduzcan sus gastos diarios al dividir los costos del trayecto con sus compañeros de viaje. Asimismo, esta alianza busca aumentar y modernizar los servicios de transporte que ofrecen las universidades, reducir los problemas de estacionamiento en los recintos, reducir la huella de carbono de los centros educativos para servir como ejemplo al país.

Con su apoyo a Coopiloto, HETS se convierte en la primera institución educacional en concienciar sobre la necesidad de reducir la dependencia del automóvil con el objetivo de reducir la contaminación ambiental por emisiones de CO2, así como disminuir el alto consumo de combustibles fósiles (gasolina) y los problemas de congestión vehicular en Puerto Rico.

The Department of State of Puerto Rico recognizes the trajectory of President José Jaime Rivera.

President José Jaime Rivera receives recognition from Secretary of State Hon. David Bernier.

President José Jaime Rivera was recognized by the Department of State of Puerto Rico (DEPR) for his significant contribution and academic trajectory through a career full of achievements and recognitions. The surprise tribute was presented during UNESCO’s cathedra event held last Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the DEPR Theater. This event brought together leading international speakers, local academic, government and other sectors leaders, who discussed the issue of Social Responsibility of Universities.

As part of President Rivera’s recognition and appreciation, the Secretary of State, Hon. David Bernier, Unescopresented a proclamation to Dr. Rivera, and Dr. Lydia Espinet, Academic Dean of USC,  read a profile and presented a video about the extensive career of President Rivera.  HETS congratulate Dr. Rivera for this tribute and appreciates his enormous collaboration and commitment to higher education within and outside of Puerto Rico.

El Departamento de Estado de Puerto Rico reconoce trayectoria del Presidente José Jaime Rivera

El Presidente José Jaime Rivera fue reconocido por el Departamento de Estado de Puerto Rico (DEPR) por su trayectoria académica y significativa aportación a través de una carrera llena de logros y reconocimientos. El sorpresivo homenaje se realizó durante un evento de las Cátedras de UNESCO que se celebró el pasado jueves, 27 de marzo de 2014 en el Teatro del DEPR. Este evento reunió a importantes oradores internacionales, líderes académicos locales, gubernamentales y de otros sectores, quienes discutieron el tema de Responsabilidad Social de las Universidades.

Como parte del reconocimiento al Presidente Rivera, el Secretario de Estado, Hon. David Bernier, entregó una proclama al Dr. Rivera, y la Dra. Lydia Espinet, Decana Académica del USC, leyó una semblanza y presentó un video sobre le extensa carrera del Presidente Rivera. Felicitamos al Dr. Rivera por este merecido homenaje y agradecemos su inmensa colaboración y compromiso con la educación superior dentro y fuera de Puerto Rico.

Save the Date EVENT JUNE -14Concurrent with its summer Board Meeting last June 19 and 20, HETS celebrated a Technology Showcase hosted by Lehman College, (CUNY). The main purpose of the event was to share Lehman College’s (LC) best practices in specific operational and educational areas. The event was transmitted live the day of the event through LC Live Stream Channel and also participants outside New York had the opportunity to participate online.

El primer evento de Cengage Learning y HETS titulado: La experiencia de aprendizaje en la era de la exploración, reunió a participantes de 15 de las 17 instituciones miembros de HETS en Puerto Rico.  Este evento tuvo lugar en la Biblioteca de la Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico en San Juan, PR, el pasado 25 de abril. El evento inició con una cordial bienvenida a los asistentes por parte de la Directora Ejecutiva de HETS, Yubelkys Montalvo, quien a su vez presentó a Heyda Delgado, Directora de Educación a Distancia de la UPPR en representación del Presidente de esa institución, y al orador principal del evento el Sr. Fernando Valenzuela, Presidente de Cengage Learning, Latinoamérica.

The Inter American University of Puerto Rico announces its 2014 Summer Law Program.

UIPRLawprogram2014The Inter American University of Puerto Rico will host the summer program Immigration, Human Rights and Maritime Law in the Caribbean. The two-week program will take place in San Juan and Vieques, Puerto Rico from July 6 to July 20, 2014. Students will have the opportunity of taking up to 4 credits in Immigration Law, Human Rights and Maritime Law taught by local faculty experts on their fields. The courses will combine class-room and experiential learning, visits to points of interests and guest lecturers. Along with the courses, students will have an exceptional cultural experience. We offer Spanish language instruction and a cultural immersion program at no additional costs. The courses are taught in English and Inter American University is an ABA approved Law School. Celebrated in January 16 and 17, 2014 the HETS Best Practices Showcase highlighted and celebrated the outstanding work of its member institutions focused on three main tracks: retention, assessment of student learning by standards and by competencies, and Distance Learning, in Higher Education with mission-driven emphasis on Hispanics students.

The 2014 Best Practices Showcase was officially opened with a panel discussion at the Theater of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, host institution of the event.  This panel of experts was moderated by HETS Chairman and President of IAUPR, Manuel Fernós, Esq. and it was composed by the following panel of experts:

To close the event, a special Track winner’s panel  fotos2took place during the second day. On this occasion, it was moderated by Dr. Nitza Hernández, Former HETS Executive Director. The panel was composed of: Assessment: Dr. Jane Delgado, Dean for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning, Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY; Distance Learning: Dr. Celia Cruz-Johnson, Reading Instructor, Reading Department, San José City College; and Retention: Dr. Marva Craig, Vice President for Student Affairs, Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY.  In addition to the videos, you can also read the power point presentations of each Best Practice on the Concurrent Sessions page.
