Brief description of the topic: Open Educational Resources (OER) are commonly defined as digital teaching, learning, and research materials that are free of cost and reside in the public domain or have been openly licensed to be used, adapted, re-used, and shared with others. OER typically includes objects such as images, videos, and interactive content or instructional materials such as lecture content, textbooks, online courses, lessons, assessments, or study guides. There are many reported benefits to OER adoption, most notably that OER provides financial savings for students and for higher education institutions (Belikov & Bodily, 2016; Bliss et al., 2013; Jhangiani et al., 2016). However, benefits of OER have the potential to extend far beyond cost savings. In this session, we will discuss other significant benefits of OER including those experienced by faculty. We will also share how OER can potentially serve as a catalyst for equity and inclusion. Using Tarrant County College Connect Campus’ OER development program as an example, we will explain how educators can leverage OER to provide low-cost learning materials that promote access and a diversity of voices, people, and perspectives represented in the curriculum.
