Description of the topic: While 18.9 percent of Americans identify as Hispanic or Latino(a), they make up just 5.8% of the nation’s physicians. This stark disparity shows why a robust pipeline of science and biomedical students, especially those from historically excluded groups like Hispanic and Latino(a) individuals, is urgently needed. Through this webinar, you will learn about opportunities in science and medicine for Hispanic and Latino(a) students attending Hispanic Serving Institutions, encouraging and empowering them to pursue graduate/medical degrees and ultimately join the health care field. Also, this initiative will help to contribute to the health of Hispanic and Latino(a) communities across the country because doctors who share a similar background can build trust with patients and bring an understanding of the unique needs their communities may have. These initiatives include research and professional development opportunities, mentorship from world-class researchers, original research projects and presentations and learning at the American Heart Association world-renowned conference.
