Part VI. Statement of Purpose
1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué? (máximo de 300 palabras)
1. Affordability and Funding: The cost of higher education has been steadily increasing over the years, making it more difficult for students to afford college. State and federal funding for public universities has also steadily decreased, leading to higher tuition rates. This poses a significant barrier to access for many students, particularly those from low-income households and those facing homelessness.
2. Student Success and Completion: Increasing numbers of students are enrolling in college, but many are not completing their degrees. Low graduation rates are a major concern for colleges and universities, as they can impact funding and accreditation. Support systems need to be improved to ensure they are successful and complete their degrees.
3. Digital Transformation: COVID-19 has accelerated the shift to online learning, and many institutions are struggling to adapt to this new environment. Developing and implementing effective online teaching and learning strategies that support student success while maintaining academic rigor and integrity is necessary. Institutions also need to ensure that students can access technology and resources needed for online learning.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)
At LaGuardia Community College, our institution recognizes the immense value and potential of instructional technology and distance education in providing enhanced learning experiences for our diverse student population. We have established several priorities and acknowledge certain challenges in leveraging these tools and approaches for the benefit of our entire organization.
Our top priority is to ensure equitable access to quality education through the integration of instructional technology. We strive to bridge the digital divide by providing the necessary resources and support for students, faculty, and staff to engage in online learning effectively. This involves offering training programs, resources, and infrastructure to enable seamless integration of technology into the curriculum and instructional practices.
Another priority is to promote active and collaborative learning experiences through instructional technology. We aim to create interactive and engaging online courses that foster student participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This requires leveraging various tools, such as learning management systems, video conferencing platforms, multimedia resources, and virtual labs, to enhance the online learning
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener? (máximo de 300 palabras)
If I had the influence to instill change at my institution, one thing I would change is to develop more career-focused programming in the 16 vocational areas defined by the Department of Labor. While my institution already has a valuable and inclusive aspect that attracts and supports a diverse student body, many students struggle with finding and maintaining employment. They require access to resources and support services tailored to their specific career paths. Therefore, I would work to increase funding and programming aimed at addressing this need.
In addition to that, I would also prioritize addressing issues such as homelessness and poverty among students. By implementing initiatives and support systems to assist students facing these challenges, we can ensure their overall well-being and provide them with a fair opportunity to succeed in their educational journey.
