PART VI: Statement of Purpose / Declaración de Intención:
1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué?:
The first issue facing higher education is declining enrollment. Enrollment is declining for multiple reasons, including changing demographics in the traditional age of college students, a perceived lack of need of a college degree, and raising wages in the workplace. Institutions of higher learning seek to diversify their student population by offering a variety of programming, including workforce development initiatives.
The second issue facing higher education, mentioned above, is the proliferation of discourse around the declining value of a college education. This perception must be met head-on by highlighting the complexity of our world and the ways in which a college education enhances one’s life as a whole.
The third issue, proliferating now, is the rise of AI technology, particularly generative AI technologies and the ways in which these technologies alter the landscape of the construction of knowledge on one level and the changing job market on another level.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización?:
Right now, our institution is in the earliest stages of assessing any leverage of instructional technology and distance education. Currently we have two completely online, remote programs: Health Information Technology and Liberal Arts. We have consistent online course offerings (both synchronous and asynchronous), courses that complement in-person courses, and we are assessing which courses are best delivered in an online, remote modality. Part of our vision for the future is to do more in this area, to serve more students, offer more courses, create new programs of study.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener?
The change I seek to instill is to provide better student supports around mental health and well-being. One way to do this work is to create a Makerspace, an innovative educational space designed to allow students to work individually and collaborative on imaginative projects of self-expression. We have colleagues with experience in Art Therapy, Mindfulness, and Mental Health. Pooling these resources, we could create a space that gives students a chance to explore their imaginations, create a sense of belonging and community, and provide a showcase for student work.
We have a very unique First-Year Experience program consisting of learning communities, linked courses, integrative learning, and experiential learning. While shaped according to the demands of new programming, this is the unique aspect of my institution that I would like to keep.
