Recently, Virtual Plaza’s staff participated from the Open-house at the Guayama Campus of the Inter American University of PR. The Consortium, with headquarters at the Central Office of the Inter American, was extended an invitation from the Guayama Campus to promote the services available through the Virtual Plaza portal for college students.
Students and faculty members had the opportunity to visit Virtual Plaza’s informational booth, browse through the portal, and search for information about career opportunities, scholarships, and graduate studies. Students also registered at the Plaza to have access to other online resources, such as online libraries, a catalog of online courses and programs from the HETS affiliated institutions; the Cybercafé, where they can communicate with students from Puerto Rico and the United States, as well as tools to help them choose a career. Also, students had the opportunity to search for a mentor to give them guidance through the HETS e-Mentoring Program.
Faculty members also had the chance to register at the Virtual Plaza portal to have access to online support resources available at the Faculty Placita. Professors who subscribe at the Plaza can take advantage of free online modules; participate from the listserv and discussion forums, and online workshop Teaching Online for Higher Education offer through the University of Texas Pan American, HETS member institution, leader in distance education.
The Virtual Plaza is a bilingual interactive portal for online learning, faculty collaboration, career exploration and mentoring support. This project was created by HETS and has been financed, in part, with funds from the Learning Anytime Anywhere Partnerships (LAAP) Program, the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE), and the U.S. Department of Education, as well as in kind contributions from HETS affiliated institutions and the private sector.
