Pathways your Institution offers to bachelor’s and/or graduate programs in areas where Hispanics are underrepresented: Here’s a breakdown of some programs offered by Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) that might serve as pathways for Hispanics to achieve success in higher education, particularly in areas where they are underrepresented, such as STEM, Healthcare, and Education: Intensive English Program (IEP) – Conditional Admission (https://semo.edu/international/english-programs/admission-conditional.html) & Pathway Admission (https://semo.edu/international/english-programs/iep-pathway.html) Conditional Admission: This program provides a pathway for non-native English speakers who meet the academic qualifications for admission but need additional English language preparation. For Hispanic students, especially those from Spanish-speaking countries, this program ensures they gain the necessary language proficiency while securing a spot in their desired academic program. This pathway helps students transition smoothly into their chosen degree programs in STEM, Healthcare, Education, or other fields, enhancing their likelihood of success. Pathway Admission: The Pathway Admission program integrates English language learning with credit-bearing courses. This allows Hispanic students to begin their degree studies while improving their English skills, accelerating their educational journey. This is particularly beneficial for students aiming to enter competitive fields like STEM, where early exposure to technical coursework is crucial. Educational Access Programs (EAP): https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/trio-eap/educational-access/ SEMO’s Educational Access Programs focus on supporting students from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds to succeed in higher education. These programs provide advising, mentoring, and financial aid resources, which are crucial for Hispanic students who may face economic and educational barriers. TRIO McNair Scholars: https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/trio-eap/trio-mcnair/ The TRIO McNair Scholars Program is designed to prepare underrepresented students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. For Hispanic students, this program provides an invaluable opportunity to gain research experience, mentorship, and academic support. This is particularly important for those pursuing advanced degrees in STEM and other fields where Hispanics are underrepresented. The program helps bridge the gap between undergraduate education and graduate studies, fostering a pipeline of Hispanic scholars and professionals in these critical areas. TRIO Student Support Services (SSS): https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/trio-eap/trio-mcnair/student-support.html TRIO Student Support Services offer comprehensive support, including tutoring, academic advising, financial literacy education, and career counseling. Hispanic students can benefit from the personalized assistance that SSS provides, helping them overcome any academic or personal challenges they may encounter. By ensuring that students receive the support they need to stay on track and succeed, SSS serves as a vital resource for those entering demanding fields such as STEM, Healthcare, and Education. Learning Assistance Programs: https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/learning-assistance/ SEMO’s Learning Assistance Programs provide tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic coaching to help students excel in their coursework. These services are particularly beneficial for Hispanic students who might need additional support in mastering the rigorous curriculum required for STEM, Healthcare, and Education majors. Access to these programs helps students build a strong academic foundation, improving their chances of success in higher education and beyond. College Success Seminars: https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/trio-eap/college-success.html College Success Seminars are designed to equip students with the skills and strategies needed to thrive in college. For Hispanic students, these seminars can be especially valuable in developing time management, study skills, and other essential competencies. By participating in these seminars, students can enhance their ability to succeed in challenging fields like STEM, Healthcare, and Education, where strong academic and professional skills are crucial. Student Mobility
Internships, student trips, and/or cultural experiences that expose students to a bilingual environment or immersion in Spanish: The first opportunity at SEMO that exposes students to a bilingual environment or immersion in Spanish is our Spanish language courses. SEMO offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish as a foreign language (https://semo.edu/academics/programs/humanities-social-sciences/comm-studies-languages/spanish-ba.html_gl=1*eo9puw*_gcl_au*MTc2NDc4OTI2OC4xNzIxMDU4OTQ3*_ga*MzUwOTEzMzI0LjE2OTc0ODM1NzE.*_ga_FTRE1LJHEK*MTcyMjYyNTc1Mi40NzUuMS4xNzIyNjI1ODMxLjUyLjAuMA..) as well as a minor in Spanish as a foreign language (https://semo.edu/academics/programs/humanities-social-sciences/comm-studies-languages/spanish-minor.html?_gl=1*1056p3w*_gcl_au*MTc2NDc4OTI2OC4xNzIxMDU4OTQ3*_ga*MzUwOTEzMzI0LjE2OTc0ODM1NzE.*_ga_FTRE1LJHEK*MTcyMjYyNTc1Mi40NzUuMS4xNzIyNjI1OTE2LjM0LjAuMA..) and a minor in Spanish for the Health Professions (https://semo.edu/academics/programs/humanities-social-sciences/comm-studies-languages/spanish-health-professions-minor.html?_gl=1*pxnrlc*_gcl_au*MTc2NDc4OTI2OC4xNzIxMDU4OTQ3*_ga*MzUwOTEzMzI0LjE2OTc0ODM1NzE.*_ga_FTRE1LJHEK*MTcyMjYyNTc1Mi40NzUuMS4xNzIyNjI1OTE5LjMxLjAuMA..) . For questions regarding our Spanish language courses, contact the Department of Communication Studies & Modern Languages at commstudies@semo.edu. A second opportunity at SEMO that exposes students to a bilingual environment or immersion in Spanish is joining or attending events hosted by the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL). The organization participates in several events throughout the year, including the university’s annual Carpe Diem event (the University’s annual cultural celebration, showcasing the diversity represented on campus) and international education week, as well as organizing and hosting their own events, such as Latino Night. For more information regarding SOL and other student organizations, contact the Office of Campus Life at campuslife@semo.edu. Another opportunity at SEMO that exposes students to a bilingual environment or immersion in Spanish is The Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year, Southeast Missouri State University, the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, and the Student Organization of Latinos/Spanish Club (SOL) offer organized activities on campus and throughout the Cape Girardeau community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. For more information regarding Hispanic Heritage Month, contact the Office of Equity Initiatives at equity@semo.edu . Additionally, SEMO offers study abroad opportunities that expose students to a bilingual environment or immersion in Spanish. SEMO has several active bilateral partnership agreements with universities abroad in Spanish-speaking destinations. These include Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) in Ecuador, Universidad de León in Spain, Universidad de Montevideo in Uruguay, EDP University in Puerto Rico, Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in Puerto Rico, and Ana G. Mendez University in Puerto Rico. SEMO students who meet eligibility requirements can study abroad for 1-2 semesters and earn 12-15 credit hours during the fall or spring semester at any of our partner institutions. For our programs in Puerto Rico, students have the option to enroll concurrently at the partner institution and SEMO, with 6 to 9 credit hours of online coursework taken at SEMO and 3-6 credit hours of coursework at the partner institution during their semester abroad. Students also have the option to enroll full-time in 12-15 credit hours at the partner institution during their semester abroad. Occasionally, our partner institutions offer opportunities for SEMO students to participate in short-term or summer programs at their institutions as well, which typically count for 3-6 credit hours, but credit earned varies by program. In addition to our bilateral agreements, SEMO is an affiliate of CIEE and AIFS, so SEMO students can participate in any of the education abroad programs offered through CIEE and AIFS, including study abroad, volunteer abroad, and internships abroad. AIFS hosts a variety of both long-term and short-term programs in Spanish-speaking countries including Spain, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Chile while CIEE hosts a variety of both long-term and short-term programs in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. In the past, we have had SEMO faculty lead short-term study abroad programs to Ecuador, Spain and other Spanish-speaking destinations, but we do not have any active faculty-led programs in Spanish-speaking destinations currently. For more information regarding incoming and outgoing study abroad/exchange programs, contact Aven Anderson, Study Abroad Coordinator, akanderson@semo.edu
Study abroad programs: We offer education abroad programs in 35+ countries with different durations and levels of benefits, costs, and housing options. SEMO financial aid may be used on all our study abroad programs. Explore our study abroad program options through SEMO’s study abroad portal: https://semo.via-trm.com/visitor-programs Who can study abroad? SEMO students who are in good standing (academic, disciplinary, financial) from ANY academic discipline are eligible to apply for a study abroad program – including international students attending SEMO. Visiting/exchange students from partner institutions who are attending SEMO for the semester or academic year may be eligible to apply for short-term study abroad programs offered during their semester or academic year at SEMO. For more information regarding incoming and outgoing study abroad/exchange programs, contact Aven Anderson, Study Abroad Coordinator, akanderson@semo.edu .
Students interested in bilateral agreements with their respective institutions: Students interested in participating in study abroad programs through our bilateral agreements at one of our partner institutions abroad may utilize the following campus resources: Visit the Study Abroad page on SEMO’s website: https://semo.edu/academics/study-abroad/ Explore our program options and apply to study abroad on the SEMO Study Abroad Portal: https://semo.via-trm.com/visitor-programs Attend a Study Abroad 101 Information Session Visit the new Study Abroad Resource Center at SEMO’s International Village Schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Coordinator through SupportNET: https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/supportnet/students.html For questions and concerns, students may schedule an appointment and/or contact Study Abroad Coordinator, Aven Anderson, at akanderson@semo.edu or studyabroad@semo.edu. We also have a part-time Study Abroad Coordinator/Faculty member at SEMO, Dr. Shu-Chuan Wang-McGrath (scwmcgrath@semo.edu) who also advises students studying abroad and assists faculty with developing short-term programs. Students will work with the department chair for their major/area of study regarding course selections/academic advising for their semester abroad, but for all other program questions, students may contact the Study Abroad Coordinators.
Interested in creating experiences for visiting students to attend your institution for a summer or short-term course: Any of SEMO’s summer courses (both online and in-person) are open to visiting/exchange students from our partner institutions abroad. Students must ensure that they meet all prerequisite requirements to take the course of interest, but there is no minimum number of hours required for summer enrollment. SEMO offers 4-week sessions, 6-week sessions, 8-week sessions, and 12-week sessions throughout the summer term which runs from mid-May to end of July/early August. A list of Summer 2025 courses is not yet available on our website, but you may see a list of courses offered in Summer 2024 on SEMO’s website: https://semo.edu/student-support/academic-support/registrar/summer-courses.html The Holland College of Arts & Media works with Dueling Arts to offer multiple stage combat workshops throughout the summer. People come here from all over the world to participate and we would love to have students from our partner institutions involved. See Dueling Arts workshops at SEMO: https://duelingarts.com/workshops/ More information available at https://duelingarts.com/ Art workshops have previously been offered SEMO but haven’t been offered in recent years due to low enrollment numbers. Faculty in our Holland College of Arts & Media are interested in developing new short-term program opportunities/experiences for incoming students from other HETS institutions. Several discussions have occurred about a short project-based course of 2-4 weeks that would allow students to work on a bilingual promotional campaign for a client. This might have interdisciplinary appeal that would ensure a good enrollment, including design, photography, and mass media students. Dr. Tamara Buck (the chair for the Department of Mass Media), Dr. Mike Simmons (Instructor for Mass Media), and Dr. Nancy Palmeri (the chair for the Department of Art+Design) are working on developing this idea, but we don’t know exactly when this program would start running. Please contact Dr. Buck at tbuck@semo.edu for more information.
Financial Aid
For visiting/exchange students who attend SEMO through one of our bilateral partnership agreements for 1-2 semesters, we offer either an exchange tuition waiver that waives the cost of tuition at Southeast (exchange students pay tuition instead to their home university during their semester at SEMO) or the Southeast Partnership Award (visiting students pay tuition to SEMO at a discounted rate negotiated with our partner institution upon signing the agreement). Visiting/exchange students are automatically given these awards upon admission to Southeast, so there is no need for a separate application. For questions, contact Student Financial Services at sfs@semo.edu or Aven Anderson, Study Abroad Coordinator, akanderson@semo.edu. For degree-seeking Incoming Freshman, there are different levels of scholarships available based on merit. Scholarship information can be found at the following webpage: https://semo.edu/student-support/financial-services/financial-aid/se-scholarships.html#freshman For degree-seeking Transfer Students, there are different levels of scholarships available based on merit. Endowed scholarship information can be found at the following webpage: https://semo.edu/about/foundation/ways-to-give/endowed-giving.html Participation scholarships are also available to any student, including degree-seeking and visiting/exchange, but require that the student is a participant of a particular academic department or group at Southeast. Common participation scholarships are listed, but students may speak to the department chair of their particular academic department to see if other scholarships exist. Participation scholarships include but are not limited to: Educational Access Programs (EAP) scholarships, Student Support Services/TRIO scholarships, Southeast Marching Band Scholarship, Military – Air Force ROTC Housing Scholarship, Military – Show Me Gold Housing Scholarship, Missouri Most Scholarship, Speech & Debate scholarships with the Department of Communication Studies and Modern Languages, Spirit Groups (Cheerleading & Sundancers) scholarships, Visual & Performing Arts Scholarships, and Athletic Team Scholarships. Work & study programs opportunities and the contact information, if any: Students pursuing degrees in Mass Communications and related fields at our partner institutions—Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Ana G. Mendez University, and Universidad de Sagrado Corazon—are eligible to participate in a work & study mobility program at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO). This exclusive opportunity, facilitated through our partnership with Gray Television, Inc., offers Puerto Rican students a unique blend of academic rigor and real-world experience. Eligible students can immerse themselves by enrolling as visiting students and taking classes at SEMO (either full-time or concurrently enrolled at their home university and SEMO) while completing an internship with Gray Television, Inc. affiliate KFVS-12 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The program provides up to four paid internships per year, offering hands-on experience for 15 to 20 hours per week at $15/hour. Completion enhances students’ academic profile and students who complete the internship will be added to Gray Television’s national talent pool, ensuring exceptional career prospects. For questions regarding the SEMO/KFVS-12 program, contact Aven Anderson, Study Abroad Coordinator, akanderson@semo.edu. In addition to the SEMO/KFVS-12 program, any student studying at SEMO who is enrolled in a minimum number of hours (U.S. citizens – 6 hours, international undergraduates – 12 hours, international graduates – 9 hours, international graduate assistants – 6 hours), whether degree-seeking or visiting/exchange, may apply to work in an on-campus position for up to 20 hours per week. During summer and breaks, students may be eligible for additional hours, based on the approval of their supervisor. The Office of Career Services posts available student worker positions on Handshake (https://semo.edu/student-support/career-support/career-services/handshake.html) . Contact the Office of Career Services at careerservices@semo.edu for questions regarding on-campus employment. Another opportunity for students to work and study is through an assistantship. At SEMO, we have two primary types of assistantships available to degree-seeking graduate students – Teaching and Administrative. The graduate assistantship is designed to provide support for a student during full-time graduate study. Technically, the assistantship is a scholarship that covers the cost of tuition. The assistantship provides an opportunity for a graduate student to serve in a professional role and to establish a professional relationship with faculty, professional staff, and/or administrators. More information and contact information for each department offering assistantships can be found at the following link: https://semo.edu/academics/grad/assistantship-openings.html Another opportunity available to degree-seeking undergraduate students to work and study is as a Resident Assistant (RA) with the Office of Residence Life. To apply for the RA position, students must be degree-seeking and have lived on campus for one year. RAs receive a scholarship that covers the cost of on-campus housing and facilitate the social, academic, and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and University. The RA develops a sense of community among residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall, and active participants in the residence life system. Contact the Office of Residence Life at residencelife@semo.edu for more information regarding the RA position. In addition to our on-campus/local work and study opportunities, we also offer SEMO students the opportunity to participate in education abroad programs that offer both academic credit and an internship placement. These internship opportunities are offered through our providers, CIEE and AIFS, and include programs in Australia, Botswana, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, New York (USA), New Zealand, Portugal, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and the UK. For questions regarding education abroad work/study opportunities, contact Aven Anderson, Study Abroad Coordinator, akanderson@semo.edu.
Student Support Services
Arriving at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) is an exciting step towards our students’ academic journeys. To ensure a smooth transition, we’ve outlined important details about transportation and housing. Transportation: Whether arriving at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, just 15 minutes away from campus, or at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, approximately two hours away, SEMO offers convenient options for every student’s journey. For Cape Girardeau arrivals, our pick-up service is available during recommended dates, which will be shared with the student upon acceptance to the program. The $25 pick-up service covers transportation from the airport to a dorm or designated housing. If opting for a St. Louis arrival, a charter bus service, priced at $75, is available on select dates. Students must share arrival information with the Office of International Education and Services at SEMO to coordinate pick-up. If not arriving during the recommended arrival dates or arriving at a different airport other than Cape Girardeau Airport, students will need to arrange their own transportation to SEMO. For transportation around campus and the Cape Girardeau area throughout the semester, SEMO’s transit system, including campus shuttles and the W.I.N.G.S shuttle, efficiently connects students across the main campus, River Campus, and the Cape Girardeau area. Explore shuttle routes on SEMO’s website: https://semo.edu/student-support/health-wellness/public-safety/transit/ Housing: SEMO provides diverse on-campus living experiences and meal plans, offering 12 options, including community and suite styles. Our halls boast amenities like computer access, television with HDMI hookup rentals, common or private bathrooms, kitchens, lounges, and laundry. Resident assistants and hall directors ensure a safe and friendly living environment. Students under 21 must live on campus, fostering a vibrant community. Check out the Living at Southeast webpage for insights into on-campus living experiences: https://semo.edu/life-at-semo/living-on-campus/ For those choosing to live off-campus, SEMO facilitates the housing release process and provides guidelines for eligibility: https://semo.edu/life-at-semo/living-on-campus/resources/on-campus-requirements.html#:~:text=To%20request%20an%20exemption%20to%20the%20residency%20requirements%2C,use%20verbal%20notification%20for%20any%20residency%20release%20decision . Not all residence halls cost the same amount, so students should choose one that fits their budget. If planning to live off-campus, students must first ensure they meet the criteria to live off campus. The cost of rent and utilities may vary depending on where they choose to live, but the average cost of rent + utilities generally ranges from $550 – $900 per month.
