Presenters: Angelos Sgouros Santos and Carlos Negrón Malavé, University of PR at Utuado
Project: C.O.D.E. (Organic Erosion Control)
Description of the project: We are innovating the way Puerto Rico’s landslide control and prevention is being handled with a more effective, efficient and economic matter. Instead of building a ugly cement wall or a costly rock-basket gabion, we are using a plant, vetiver, a deep-rooted grass that has an incredible capacity on its root system, they can extend up to 15 feet underground, creating a natural barrier that stabilizes slopes and prevents erosion. When you plant them strategically, they prevent erosion almost 100% guaranteed. The Vetiver System has been used successfully in many countries in the world, including Australia, Brazil, Central America, China, Ethiopia, India, Italy, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
