Project: Structured Tutoring for Student Success
Description of the project: EDP University of Puerto Rico serves a high proportion of low-income Hispanic and first-generation college students who often enter college with academic preparation gaps that affect persistence and degree completion. To address this challenge, the University implemented a Structured Tutoring Program through the Title V EHSAS Project to strengthen performance in high-risk courses and improve retention.
The program provides individualized tutoring, led by trained peer tutors, and is delivered through both in-person and online modalities. Technology tools are being implemented to enhance the delivery and accessibility of tutoring services.
Early outcomes are promising. The program projects that 64% of identified high-risk students will participate in tutoring, with approximately 70% completing critical courses with a minimum grade of “C.” These results point to improved academic momentum and persistence.
This presentation highlights the program’s design, early outcomes, and lessons learned, offering a replicable and cost-effective model for promoting student success within Hispanic serving and access focused institutions.
