Presenter: Steven G. Muñoz Nieves, Inter American University of PR, Aguadilla Campus
Project: ALEKS Math: Academic Persistence and Progress in Coursework
Description of the project: The Blended Learning for MATH Achievement project was designed to improve student persistence, academic achievement, and the overall learning experience in mathematics courses by integrating blended learning strategies supported by adaptive technology. By implementing ALEKS Math, the project provided students with a personalized learning experience that addressed individual needs, fostering greater autonomy, engagement, and academic confidence.
A representative example of the project’s success is the experience of student Steven G. Muñoz Nieves, a Microbiology major with a minor in Computer Science and a pre-med concentration. Steven has maintained an outstanding cumulative GPA of 3.82 and has served as a mathematics mentor for approximately one and a half years. His experience using ALEKS Math allowed him to strengthen foundational mathematical skills, identify areas for improvement, and progress at his own pace, contributing significantly to his academic performance and persistence in high-demand STEM coursework.
Project outcomes show consistent increases in retention and pass rates across courses such as GEMA 1000, GEMA 1200, MATH 1500, MATH 1511, MATH 1512, and MATH 2251. Key lessons learned include the importance of combining technology with academic mentoring, continuous monitoring, and student guidance, as well as the need for ongoing faculty training to fully leverage the instructional potential of educational technologies.
Biography: Steven is currently in his third year pursuing a degree in Microbiology, with minors in Computer Science and Pre-Medical Studies. He maintains an outstanding academic record with a GPA of 3.82, reflecting his strong work ethic, dedication, and academic excellence. In addition, Steven has served as a mathematics mentor for the past year and a half, where he has demonstrated responsibility, leadership, and a genuine commitment to supporting the academic success of his peers.
