On April 10, 2015, HETS celebrated its first ever HETS Student Leadership Showcase in New York City at Borough of Manhattan Community College. More than 40 students participated from institutions like: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Lehman College, Berkeley College, Bergen Community College, Queensborough Community College and Hostos Community College, and took advantage of this event celebrated for the first time on the north east region.
The main purpose of this event was to promote free of charge access to student services online provided by HETS that can support their academic goals and share with them topics about how to use technology to maximize their resources. Those services were presented by Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo, HETS Executive Director, who also invited students to be part of the HETS Student Advisory Committee to work hand in hand with the Committee established in Puerto Rico, and encouraged them to submit proposals of any innovative project developed by them to showcase it in future students’ events and encourage others to do the same.
Additional success stories of professionals were presented, as part of the event agenda like: Mr. Leo Marín, Account Strategist, from Google Inc., responsible for creating, executing, and growing digital campaigns that help fortune 500 advertisers reach the US Hispanic audience, who presented the variety of resources developed by Google to students; Ms. Jennifer Fernández, City Council Program Assistant, CUNY Citizenship Now, also a bachelor degree student of Economics from Queens College and emerging leadership women, talked about her experience as student and leader at CUNY; Mr. Ronald Bautista, Digital Marketing Strategist at Grupo Parada talked about how to “Market Yourself Online” to learn how to take control your online visibility to tell your unique story on Social Media.
The event closed with the student recommendation session which will allow HETS to learn more about student interests and needs to collaborate on exploring solutions to create additional support services, followed by a raffle of articles provided by our sponsors and lunch. HETS recognized and appreciated BMCC staff that helped with the setup of their outstanding facilities and the recording of the event, and the speakers who share their expertise and experiences with our students. This event is part of the HETS Student Leadership Tour for this spring semester, including the North and Northeast regions of Puerto Rico during March, 2015. Next stop of this tour will be at the Southwestern region on May 1st at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico in Ponce. On September 25, 2015 the second HETS Student Leadership Showcase in Puerto Rico will be celebrated at the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus.
