I am part of the Faculty engaged in courses for Medical Students in the following courses: Clinical Research, Epidemiology, and Medical Ethics. I am also one of the teaching faculty of the Clinical and Translational Research Course provided by the MSC Title V program. Within that same offering, I have led the development, coordination and evolution of the Financial Literacy and Scientific Entrepreneurship training program. As Principal Investigator of Semilla, I am in charge of the oversight of curriculum development, and implementation with fidelity and adherence across the three implementation sites. I am also part of the training and mentoring component of the program that targets undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students (Pediatrics residents); and combines online teaching with community immersion activities that allow them to develop their teaching and teamwork abilities. Residents will also engage in system level assessments that will be supported through online teaching and multi sector exchanges.

I am a Robert Wood Johnson Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Alumni. Leading emergency response teams set forth by our College of Physicians and Surgeons following Irma and María has been acknowledged by their Board, and the American Academy of Pediatrics at the local and Regional Level. Faculty of the Neurodevelopmental ECHO for the American Academy of Pediatrics National since its inception in 2016, and District X Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder champion for approximately the same number of years. Awarded: Productivity Award by the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium (now Alliance), inducted to Sigma Xi in 2021, Doctor’s Choice and Marqui Who’s Who. This year I was elected as President of the Research and Technological Innovation Institute the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and invited to speak at the Advancing Equitable Research: Developing innovative and inclusive policy solutions panel of the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.

I am a member of the Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Review committee of the Puerto Rico Department of Health, Steering Committee of the Puerto Rico Chapter of March of Dimes, Medical Director of the “Pedagogía de Emergencia” Puerto Rico Team, supporter of community based organization and consultant to HRSA service programs that address health disparities such as Comienzo Saludable. Our STEM+M program is a community based collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico. Our center is dedicated to action oriented research with a commitment to community led and informed solutions. Our partners include the PR WIC, CEMTAS, ACUTAS, Faro de Esperanza, among others. To continue to promote formative experiences that support the interaction between professionals in training regardless of their stage and are of focus, and the community they aim to serve. In doing so, we hope to accomplish the transformation of the current value system of the academic and sponsoring institutions to integrate the value of community based work and alternate measures of impact in their environment, experience and productivity assessments.

My training and experience to date have provided me with the background to engage in program development and coordination. However, my formal training and academic professional development has been limited in regards to curriculum design and strategy alignment within the requirements for accreditation and pedagogy frameworks.

1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué? (máximo de 300 palabras)
We need to integrate the effects of technology in the skillset and expectations of trainees in their educational experience. At the same time trainees would benefit from guidance in how established methods and in person exchanges play an important growth in professional development. Theoretical frameworks evaluation methods should reflect the skill or knowledge that we acknowledge to be an essential skill in their future which not necessarily best met by current evaluation and validation standards.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)
Our institution has a well established track towards the support of online learning and the exportation of our educational services to others in our community beyond our archipelago. There are still steps to manage but current momentum has established the groundwork for us to be able to advance the transformation in that direction using existing and evolving infrastructure.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? I would broaden the offering to build bridges between disciplines and areas of applied learning to bring community based practitioners in close contact with academics and foster team based efforts and solutions to our common needs.
