1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué? (máximo de 300 palabras)
We have less students admitted every academic year and students lack the basic skills needed to thrive in demanding academic programs at our Institution leading to worrisome retention rates. Despite the recruitment efforts invested, we have found that students are not necessarily interested in pursuing bachelor’s degrees; some students are interested in careers that demand less time in terms of completion, and these are just a few of the issues that we are currently facing in higher ed. On the other hand, we have students that do not necessarily meet the profile of a traditional student that is completely full time only. Most of our students work and study at the same time which poses a challenge when they are required to attend face-to-face courses or simply register in a specific amount of courses. For that matter, having limited modalities as part of our academic offer reduces the chances to increase retention rates. Lastly, having less tenured professors is an issue that has been affecting our Institution for many years. The lack of specialist in service departments and academic departments means less course sections to offer every semester. Thus, resulting in the problems that we are currently facing that have pushed educators to reinvent themselves many times over.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)
Our Institution is seeking to increase de design and development of quality online courses and certifications in a responsible manner to meet the needs of the audience that we serve, attract undergraduate students in and outside of Puerto Rico interested in our programs and professionals seeking for professional development opportunities. Having online courses available enables us to reach audiences that do not necessarily have the means of transportation to attend face-to-face courses in our campus plus it also poses a challenge for all educators onboard to seek for new ways to teach effectively.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener? (máximo de 300 palabras)
I would love to educate and model how to design and implement effective online courses to a Faculty that needs to adopt a new mindset. The COVID-19 pandemic struck and took many content experts off- guard; thus, causing traumatic experiences for educators that were not technology savvy. If chosen to participate of this academy, I know that I will gain what I need to polish my five(5) year workplan. On another note, my Institution has educators that are committed and genuinely interested in seeing undergraduate students succeed. I think that this is a unique aspect considering the challenges faced over the past two(2) years.
