How Do I Put the “I” In RSI?

General description of the project

TCC Connect Campus eLearning Instructional Design took on explaining and breaking down the application of Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) for its faculty following the clarification of the law that went into effect on July 1, 2021. Providing concrete classroom experience examples as well as independent-study courses allows Connect faculty to apply RSI principles in their instruction. Session will include concrete examples and best practices that would apply to an RSI audit as well as checklists that can be used by faculty coaches or administrators to help guide faculty in the application of RSI principles in their course.

Technologies

Technologies used will include examples from Canvas LMS, although the concepts may be transferred to any LMS platform. By providing concrete examples of best practices, there has been a significant effect in online/distance learning courses that include individual student assignment feedback and weekly announcements and nominal effect when applying rubrics and discussion boards (varied instructor participation).

Explain project results

TCC is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). In its March issue, Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine named Tarrant County College one of the nation’s Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics. TCC is ranked #5 for community colleges with the greatest total enrollment of Hispanic students for 2018-2019 and #10 in the number of associate degrees awarded to Hispanic students in 2019.

Why it should be considered best practice?

Our RSI information is easily replicated; we can provide a Canvas course export that will include templates. Additionally the RSI information is based in research based, best practices and those are referenced throughout the materials.
