OER to Develop Zero Text Book Cost Section
In the fall 2016, I participated in the initiative to develop a “zero textbook cost” section for introduction to college mathematics. The section is completely developed and approved by the Lumen Learning and is offering in the spring 2017. This is developed using the “MyOpenMath” platform. “MyOpenMath” runs on the open source, providing free hosted use of this platform in support of free, open textbooks. The intent is to provide classroom use of the platform, without any required cost to students and to provide students self-study opportunities. This can be used for variety of STEM courses.
Technologies
The technology that is used is called “MyOpenMath”. While most students use MyOpenMath in connection with an instructor-led course, MyOpenMath can be used by students as a self-study resource. MyOpenMath provides interactive assessment to supplement several free and open math textbooks that can be read online, or printed copies can be ordered through our partner site, OpenTextBookStore.com. All our self-study courses include online interactive, self-grading assessment that can automatically create new versions of problems to provide unlimited practice with instant feedback. Some include video lessons.
Explain project results
In this presentation, I will demonstrate the use of “MyOpenMath” software in developing the course and some pros and cons of using the software. After the presentation, the audience will have some basic idea about the platform and will be able to start the process of developing their own course using the software. The audience are encouraged to bring a laptop and follow along if they want a hand on experience during the presentation.
Why it should be considered best practice?
The cost of Textbook has increased very rapidly over the past decade. The publishing companies are taking advantage of this and made a lot of profit. The cost of textbook is another bardain that students need to consider on top of their student loan. If we can make a good use of “Open Education Resource” to develop a “Zero Textbook” course, that will certainly improve the retention rate and at the same time encourage students to continue in their path of study.
