Technologies
Blackboard, Digication ePortfolio
Explain project results
Optimize retention of Hispanic students in online courses or programs, Promote the effective development and implementation of assessment efforts in Distance Learning, Assure student authentication in the online environment, Manage contact hours to assure equivalence of activities between distance education and regular courses
Why it should be considered best practice?
Adapting to college-level writing can be a daunting task especially for students in Hispanic institutions with a majority of first-generation college students who may speak English as a second language. However by utilizing the virtual platform students are familiar with while building rapport in class, hybrid expository writing courses can be an ideal way to facilitate the transition to college-level writing. Having 10+ years of experience combining different technologies to teach expository writing, I have found that combining online and in-class environment is most effective for students who are web literate but need more time flexibility to balance work and school. Utilizing Blackboard as the course management system and Digication ePortfolio as the creative platform, students are able to keep track of their performance while being challenged to think outside-of-the-box. In class, students are able to share ideas through synchronous feedback and they continue their extended discussion beyond the classroom through ePortfolio.
