PART VI: Statement of Purpose (no more than 300 words each question) Statement of Purpose (no more than 300 words each question) / Declaración de Intención (máximo de 300 palabras para cada pregunta)
1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué? (máximo de 300 palabras)
Digital divide: Many students lack access to reliable network services and modern devices. This creates a barrier for students to take full advantages of online learning and technology. This is especially true for community college students.
Declining enrollment: On one hand, students are looking for options that provide them with a fast path to a well-paid job and most of the time colleges do not provide that. On the other hand, employers require knowledgeable employees who are ready for the job and recent graduates most of the time are not.
Unprepared students: While a high school diploma signifies completion of secondary education, it doesn’t always guarantee readiness for the rigors of higher education. This can leave some students unprepared for the pace, workload, and academic expectations of college-level courses. Consequently, offering remedial classes or additional support services to help these students bridge the gap and succeed in their academic pursuits.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)
Hostos’ priority is to fully launch and support three online programs. In this way, the programs can be offered in-person an asynchronous in parallels to offer additional options for students who are parents, work during the day and the only way they can achieve success is by participating online. However, many processes need to be modified to support distant learning and ensuring students don’t need to come in-person and allow out of state/country participation.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener? (máximo de 300 palabras)
I would change the process of selecting technology and I would make sure it is more open by involving experts as well as users before any software is acquired. Sometimes, technology is bought without consulting with users, and it end up not being the proper one to solve the issues it is supposed to solve.
I would definitely keep the diverse culture and background of students, instructors, and administrators. Having diverse cultures in a community college enriches the learning environment. It exposes students to a wide array of perspectives, fostering a sense of global awareness and understanding. Diverse classrooms encourage students to challenge their assumptions and biases, developing their empathy and critical thinking skills. Additionally, a diverse student body reflects the real-world environment, preparing students to collaborate and succeed in an increasingly interconnected global society. Community colleges with diverse cultures create a welcoming and inclusive space, ensuring that all students feel a sense of belonging.
