-Access and Affordability:
Why: Many individuals face barriers to accessing higher education due to financial constraints. The rising costs of tuition, fees, and related expenses make education less accessible for some segments of the population.
-Technology Integration and Online Learning:
Why: The rapid evolution of technology has necessitated a shift toward online learning and digital resources. While this transition offers flexibility and access to a broader audience, it poses challenges related to the digital divide, ensuring quality online education, and fostering student engagement.
-Equity and Inclusion:
Why: There is an ongoing need to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education. Institutions are grappling with creating inclusive environments that support students from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)
Similar to other educational institutions CSUSB face various priorities and challenges when it comes to leveraging instructional technology and distance education. These priorities and challenges impact the overall effectiveness of the organization in delivering quality education.
CSUSB Priorities
-Enhancing Learning Experience:
Improving the overall learning experience for students through the effective integration of technology.
-Access and Inclusivity:
CSUSB needs to ensure equitable access to education for all students, regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status.
-Data Security and Privacy:
Priority: Implementing robust data security and privacy measures to protect student and institutional data. Safeguarding sensitive information is crucial for maintaining trust and compliance with data protection regulations.
-Investing in Infrastructure:
Investing in the necessary technological infrastructure to support a seamless and reliable online learning environment.
CSUSB Challenges:
-Resource Allocation:
Allocating sufficient resources, both financial and human, to support the ongoing development and maintenance of instructional technology.
-Digital Divide:
Addressing the digital divide to ensure that all students have access to the required technology and internet connectivity.
Faculty Resistance and Training:
Overcoming resistance from faculty members who may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with incorporating technology into their teaching methods or using the LMS (Learning Management System) to their full potential including online testing.
Balancing these priorities and addressing challenges requires a strategic approach, collaboration among stakeholders, and a commitment to staying abreast of technological advancements and best practices in distance education.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener? (máximo de 300 palabras)
If I had the influence to instill change at CSUSB, one thing I might consider changing is the integration and support for interdepartmental collaboration. Interdepartmental/interdisciplinary collaboration often sparks innovation by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise. Many of the challenges we face today require a multidisciplinary approach. Encouraging this type of collaboration at the institutional level can better prepare us to equip students to address and solve real-world problems. Breaking down silos can help us to be more agile and efficient solving these complex real-world problems.
If there’s a unique aspect of CSUSB that I would like to preserve, it could be a strong emphasis on community engagement and service learning. Preserving and even enhancing this commitment would reinforce CSUSB’s role as a positive force in the community.
