Part VI. Statement of Purpose

1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why? (no more than 300 words) / Desde su perspectiva, ¿cuáles son los tres principales problemas que enfrenta la educación superior hoy día? ¿Por qué? (máximo de 300 palabras)

1. Providing or highlighting inclusion values within the classroom.
2. Taking action in actively diversifying the higher learning student population.
3. Having mentors that can dedicate sufficient time to their mentees, mentors who are committed to efficient online learning and mentors who are empathetic towards the adversity that we face this day and age

2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization? (no more than 300 words) / ¿Cuáles son las prioridades y los retos de su institución con respecto al aprovechamiento de la tecnología educativa y la educación a distancia en beneficio de toda la organización? (máximo de 300 palabras)

Our institutions present priority is to promote mentorship for medical students and faculty in the area of research. With the pandemic, we have observed that there are students that show interest in working on-line while others prefer in-person education. This makes it difficult to promote our institutions current priority. Another problematic factor is the faculty’s availability and interest in mentoring students within the medical program. Some researchers’ activities include working from home and solely working on developing new projects while having post-docs or technicians complete the benchwork. Other professors are not professionally developed enough to bring in new students since they still need close attention from senior researchers. This, along with our new in-pandemic reality needs to be tackled soon as too not prevent our medical students’ development within research. A possible solution would be the development of a new research program aimed at implementing both educational specific to either or both on-line and in-person education.

3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep? (no more than 300 words) / Si pudiera influir para lograr algún cambio en su institución, ¿cuál sería? y ¿cuál es el aspecto único de su institución que le gustaría mantener? (máximo de 300 palabras)

I would opt to further implement the use of educational technologies on line to promote mentorship opportunities for medical students interested in research. One unique aspect of Universidad Central del Caribe that I would keep would have to be its medicine department faculty. They have taken it upon themselves, to a certain extent, to implement mostly clinical research education and experience to medical students in our program.
