2026 Best Practices Showcase Evaluation

Empowering Hispanic Learners Through AI Integration: Best Practices in Online Course Design

General description of the project

This project showcases the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the instructional design of online Spanish and professional courses aimed at Hispanic learners across Puerto Rico and the United States. Through AI-powered feedback, interactive course activities, and accessible multimedia, the initiative has enhanced student motivation, retention, and completion. Evidence from course analytics demonstrates higher engagement in writing, speaking, and critical thinking assignments when AI-supported prompts and adaptive feedback are implemented. The initiative has proven cost-effective by streamlining course development and providing scalable solutions for faculty and students. Lessons learned include the importance of aligning AI integration with ethical standards, accessibility guidelines, and cultural responsiveness to ensure equitable outcomes.

Technologies

The project uses AI-powered platforms (ChatGPT, Copilot, Magic School, Canva Magic Studio) for instructional support, content creation, formative feedback, and interactive student activities. Multimedia tools (ScreenPal, LMS-integrated discussion boards, and adaptive quizzes) were integrated to enrich student experiences. These technologies were strategically implemented to:

Personalize learning pathways for Hispanic students.

Automate formative feedback, saving faculty time while improving the quality of responses.

Foster student collaboration and reflection through guided prompts.
The technologies were evaluated not only for functionality but for their effectiveness in meeting learning outcomes and improving persistence.

Explain project results

The project directly impacted Hispanic student success by:

Increasing course retention rates in fully online Spanish courses.

Enhancing student confidence in writing and speaking activities through AI-supported practice.

Supporting faculty efficiency by automating repetitive tasks, allowing more focus on mentoring and higher-level instructional support.

Providing equitable access to high-quality, interactive resources for students with limited technological or academic support.

At the institutional level, the initiative improved course development workflows, reducing turnaround time for new online courses and ensuring alignment with Quality Matters standards.

Why it should be considered best practice?

This project represents a replicable and scalable model for higher education institutions serving Hispanic learners. It highlights how AI integration, when guided by ethical and pedagogical principles, can:

Improve learning outcomes.

Increase student retention and completion.

Support culturally responsive teaching.
By strategically combining AI with instructional design best practices, institutions can meet the dual goals of innovation and equity.

Highlights of your proposed presentation

The presentation will:

Demonstrate AI-powered course activities and faculty workflows.

Share evidence of student engagement and performance gains.

Discuss challenges of balancing innovation with accessibility, ethics, and cultural sensitivity.

Provide practical strategies for institutions seeking to replicate this approach to support Hispanic learners in online environments.

The Evaluation Committee will evaluate submitted proposals based on the following criteria. Each area will be rated on a scale from 1 to 5 (1= non-satisfactory; 5 =outstanding), for a maximum of 45 points.
