Quality Enhancement Plan in Developmental Mathematics Courses at a Hispanic Serving Institution in South Texas.

Bio

Dr. Andrés Padilla-Oviedo, Developmental Mathematics Instructor

Dr. Andrés Padilla-Oviedo holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a master’s degree in mathematical sciences and a doctorate in education. He has taught mathematics three years in high school, two years at South Texas College and four years at the University of Texas-Pan American. Currently he is working for the developmental mathematics department at South Texas College as an instructor.
Mario Morin holds both bachelors and master degrees in Mathematics from the University of Texas-Pan American. He started working at South Texas College as a full-time Mathematics Instructor in 2003. While working at South Texas College, he has assumed various roles and responsibilities including: Lead Instructor, Project Director of Summer PreCalculus Institute grant, Project Director of the U.S. Department of Education’s College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) grant, Academic Grants and Project Officer and the University Relations, Transfer and Articulation Center Coordinator. Most recently, Mario assumed the role of Program Chair of the Department of Mathematics.

General description of the initiative or project

South Texas College implemented a Quality Enhancement Plan that redesigned the traditional developmental math three-course sequence (MATH 80, MATH 85 and MATH 90) into a two-course sequence (MATH 100 and MATH 200) with expanded lab hours and a redesigned pedagogical approach, including increased lab time and computer-aided instruction. In addition, the proposed design incorporated mandatory assessment, active learning techniques, computer assisted instruction and intensive student support services.
