Dr. Alice J. Casanova

With nearly 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Casanova has worked in the in various capacities, including leading academic initiatives focused on developing and transitioning academic programs to an online format. Also, she spent more than eight years working on regional and specialized accreditation processes, and for the past 15 years, she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on research methodologies, innovation, and distance education.

Dr. Casanova worked on the development of the Digital Learning Unit at Albizu University as Director of Digital Learning and is currently an associate professor at the Miami Campus. Also, she collaborates with HETS in different initiatives, like the Best Practices Showcase, and the HETS Learning Technologies Leadership Academy (H-LTLA).

Her work has been recognized by several organizations, which invited her to serve on advisory boards for the Board of Postsecondary Institutions of the Puerto Rico Department of State and is a peer reviewer for the Online Learning Journal published by the Online Learning Consortium. Also, she is member of the International Network of Researchers in Distance, Online, and Open Education (REDIC), and member of the Board of Directors of the Internet Society’s Puerto Rico Chapter. Casanova holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education with a specialization in Teaching and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a Certificate in Higher Education from Harvard University. Her research focuses on the competencies and role of online instructors, distance education, and its various modalities.

Alice Jovanna Casanova, cuenta con más veinte (20) laborando en el sector de la Educación Superior desde diversos escenarios. Ha dirigido procesos académicos en la creación y transformación de oferta académica a la modalidad virtual. Laboró por más de 8 años en procesos de acreditaciones regionales y especializadas y por los últimos 15 años ha sido profesora en el nivel sub-graduado y graduado en cursos de metodologías de investigación, innovación y educación a distancia.

Laboró en el desarrollo de la Unidad de Aprendizaje Digital de la Universidad Albizu como directora de Aprendizaje Digital, y actualmente es catedrática asociada en el recinto de Miami. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido por varias organizaciones, que la invitaron a formar parte de Juntas Consultivas para la Junta de Instituciones Postsecundarias del Departamento de Estado de Puerto Rico. Además, es Peer Reviewer para la revista Online Learning Journal de Online Learning Consortium, miembro de la Red Internacional de Investigadores en Educación a Distancia, en Línea y Abierta (REDIC) y parte de la Junta de Directores de la Internet Society Capítulo de Puerto Rico. Posee un Doctorado en Filosofía de la Educación con especialidad en Docencia y una Maestría en Currículo y Enseñanza; además de un Certificado en Educación Superior de Harvard University. En sus áreas de investigación desarrolla temas sobre las competencias y el rol del docente virtual, la Educación a Distancia y sus modalidades.
