Abstract

Power BI is currently the market leader for business intelligence tools. Through literature, it can be seen that the use and benefits of Power BI should not be exclusively associated with companies that sell products or services. Therefore, in this study, the following research question was established: Is Power BI an useful tool in higher education institutions that offer services to Hispanic students? To answer the question, a qualitative study was carried out to describe and analyze the dashboard development process using Power BI at a higher education institution in Puerto Rico. Findings of this study suggest that the development of dashboards in Power BI was achieved with three main objectives: (1) institutional data presentation, (2) research findings presentation, and (3) student learning assessment results presentation.  This research found that institutional data presented through dashboards allows for informed data-based decisions, which is a fundamental part of effective planning in an institution. In addition, the use of Power BI allows us to focus efforts and resources in the right direction.
