  • New Workshop Sessions for the HETS Basic Certification, Completely Online! HETS Announces the new sessions starting August 2011. Register online today! The HETS consortium opened the new sessions completely online of the HETS Basic Certification: Integración de nuevas tecnologías en la Educación Superior. Each workshop will be validated with 12 contact hours, and at the end of the 4 workshops series, participants will get a total of 4.8 continuing education credits. Participants will have 4 weeks to complete the activities as required, giving them enough time to learn at their pace and convenience. These workshops will be offered in Moodle or Blackboard online platforms. During these workshops, each participant will have the personalized assistance of experts from some of our Member Institutions in respective topics.   • HETS reinforces its commitment with International Higher Education Institutions through collaboration with Blackboard, in Colombia HETS and Cognos OnLine, collaborated with Blackboard, Inc during the workshops presented in Colombia on June 2011 As part of the agreement with one of our Major Corporate Partners, Blackboard Inc (Bb), HETS had the opportunity to extend the collaboration, this time, to several Higher Education Institutions in Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, Colombia. These series of workshops were possible thanks to the efforts of Cognos OnLine, Bb representative in Colombia, who coordinated these events through the HETS office. More than 100 faculty members from: Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá), Fundación Universitaria Los Libertadores (Bogotá), Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia ( Medellín) and Universidad Autónoma de Occidente (Cali) took advantage of these workshop sessions conducted in June 2011 by one of the HETS Member Institution Expert from National University College. HETS have been recognized for its commitment to achieve excellence in Higher Education, especially among the Hispanic community.   • Live Ustream Transmission for the HETS Best Practices in Assessing Student Learning and Institutional Effectiveness at Lehman College HETS Assessment event will take place on June 29, 2011 at Lehman College HETS it’s delighted to celebrate an Assessment event at Lehman College (Bronx, NY) to highlight the Best Practices in Assessing Student Learning and Institutional Effectiveness. This event will take place on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Music Building, Faculty Dining (Ground Floor), Lehman College.   • HETS continues its commitment with International Higher Education Institutions through collaboration with Blackboard in Mexico HETS collaborated with Blackboard Inc. during the Bb Forum in Mexico City on March 2011 As part of the agreement with one of our Major Corporate Partners, Blackboard Inc. (Bb), HETS had the opportunity to collaborate for the second consecutive year of the Bb Forum event held in Mexico City during March 2011. As part of this Forum, two of the sessions were presented by HETS Member Institution experts from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico and the Ana G. Méndez University System. Participants from various higher education institutions in Mexico took advantage of different sessions during this event in which HETS has been a collaborator. Among the institutions that were represented at this workshop are: Universidad Anahuac del Sur, National Public Health Institute, University of the Americas-Puebla, Tecnológico de Monterrey- Santa Fe Campus, Virtual University of Liverpool and participants of the Distance Baccalaureate Program of the Mexican Government Federal District.   • HETS Launches Second Issue of the HETS Online Journal The Spring edition of the HETS Online Journal includes four peer reviewed articles. On October 1st, 2010 HETS launched the Inaugural issue of the HETS Online Journal, a peer reviewed electronic publication that will be published twice a year. This time, HETS proudly presents the second issue of this electronic publication, launched on March 24, 2011. The purpose of the HETS Online Journal is to disseminate the research, findings, use and best practices in online education among those interested in this topic worldwide. Especially, this publication intends to reach professionals interested in the areas of online teaching, learning, and training. The journal essentially publishes original, peer-reviewed and high quality scientific papers, research review, evidence-based articles, as well as other products of research in the field of technology in education. The Spring issue of the HETS Online Journal included a total of four peer reviewed articles.   • HETS Announces New Face to Face Sessions for the Advanced Certification: Integración de Nuevas Tecnologías en la Educación Superior. HETS Advanced workshops will start on April 29st, 2011. Online registration is available. HETS Professional Development Events (PDEs) have been designed to increase the awareness on the uses and advantages of technology to improve education. HETS Consortuim has opened the new face to face sessions of its Advanced Workshops. The Advanced Certification: Integración de Nuevas Tecnologías en la Educación Superior is a series of four advanced workshops in Spanish. Each workshop will be validated with 6 contact hours, and at the end of these advanced workshop series, participants will get a total of 2.4 continuing education units (CEU). Through these practical workshops, participants are able to enhance their skills in the delivery, implementation, and use of new technologies in their teaching-learning practice and student support experience.   • HETS 2011 Winter Board Meeting Sets 2011-2014 Focus The HETS January Board of Directors Meeting was successfully held at the University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan, PR on January 13 and 14. Besides allowing the discussion of the key accomplishments of the organization during the first semester of the 2010-2011 year, this meeting was crucial in setting the focus for the direction of the organization from 2011 through 2014. The next three years will continue to be essential in the continuous growth and development of the HETS Consortium and the capacity-building of its member institutions. After the evaluation and discussion of not only possibilities, but also current needs and future challenges, the Board decided to continue pursuing the accomplishment of the Consortium’s mission through three core areas of focus: access to postsecondary opportunities for Hispanics, retention of the Hispanic learner, and assessment of learning strategies for Hispanic Students.   • HETS Mission Reinforced by its First Major Corporate Partners HETS is pleased to announce that Ramona Munsell and Associates, Inc. (RMA), Blackboard Corporation (Bb) and Knowlity Corporation (KC) have become the first ever Major Corporate Partners, a commitment that extends throughout a three-year period, beginning late 2010. Major Corporate Partner is the highest category of the HETS Corporate Partnership Program, an initiative created to gather the support of organizations interested in endorsing and promoting the advancement of Hispanic higher education through technology innovations and educational technology opportunities. RMA’s, Bb’s and KC’s contributions will support the expansion of new programs and services for HETS member institutions, including professional development events, special educational workshops, the HETS Online Journal, and online tools, among others. You will find excerpts from the recent HETS Online Journal Webinar and photo Galleries of activities sponsored by HETS and its members. Video clips of news and events of HETS member institutions and partners are also highlighted. The Consortium seeks to use this Channel as a vehicle of communication and sharing of recent events related to its mission. We have already subscribed to thirteen Channels of our member institutions. Last September 20, 2010, after striving to identify the most adept candidate, HETS hired Ms. Yelixa M. Castro-Cruz, MBA as the new Executive Assistant and Public Relations Coordinator.   • New Year, New Board Officers for HETS after 2010 Summer Meeting This summer’s HETS Board Meeting celebrated not only the end of one exciting and successful year, but also the closing of a three-year strategic plan term that brought many growth and development opportunities for the HETS Consortium. This Board meeting also gave place to the election of the HETS Board Officers for the next two years, which includes Dr. Eduardo Martí as the new Chairman of the Board. Also part of the new Executive Committee are Dr. José F. Méndez, elected Vice-Chair; Dr. José Jaime Rivera, elected Treasurer; Professor Nilda Nadal, reelected as Secretary for a second term; and Dr. Wendy Lawrence and Dr. Ivonne Chirino, both elected as regional representatives. In June 2010, HETS ended its three-year strategic plan period. During the meeting, the Board discussed HETS’s achievements during the past three years, and explored a series of key priorities for the years to come.
