  • HETS representation as an At Large organization during ICANN’s 50th meeting in London. HETS Executive Director, Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo participated along with more than 3,300 people from around the world of the ICANN’s 50th meeting in London, making it the largest in the organization’s history. HETS was certified as an At Large organization on year 2013, and have been actively participating of conference calls and webinars to get involved on ICANN initiatives. During the opening session of the London meeting, key people made important comments like: Fadi Chehadé, President and CEO of ICANN, who said: “Today is a great day for advancement of the multistakeholder model and its inclusivity”. “ICANN 50 is a milestone meeting for many reasons, not the least of which is the remarkable affirmations of the multistakeholder model it has brought.” Also, Chehadé applauded the Chinese government’s adoption of the DNSSEC deployment and the expansion of the IPv6 protocol, which he said will assured the expansion of the continued global expansion of the Internet.   • Watch here the videos of the HETS Technology Showcase Event held June 19 and 20, 2014 in New York. Concurrent with its summer Board Meeting last June 19 and 20, HETS celebrated a Technology Showcase hosted by Lehman College, (CUNY). The main purpose of the event was to share Lehman College’s (LC) best practices in specific operational and educational areas. The event was transmitted live the day of the event through LC Live Stream Channel and also participants outside New York had the opportunity to participate online.   • New Executive Committee elected during summer 2014 Board Meeting in New York. President of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Manuel Fernós, Esq., was reelected as HETS Chairman during the annual summer Board Meeting celebrated at Lehman College, NY on June 19-20, 2014. Collaborating with Fernós as HETS Board of Officers will be Dr. Gloria Baquero, President of National University College elected as First Vice Chair; Dr. Carlos Vargas, Interim President from Kutztown University, reelected as Second Vice Chair, and President of the Ana G. Méndez University System, Dr. José F. Méndez elected as the new Treasurer.  Additional reelections includes; Dr. Dario Cortés, President of Berkeley College as secretary; Eng. Gladys Nieves, President of EDP College; and Dr. Carole Berrotte Joseph, President of Bronx Community College; as regional representatives.   • HETS presents special recognition and appreciation to President José Jaime Rivera’s on his Farewell during the HETS Board Meeting, June 2014. HETS and all its members recognized and highlighted the legacy of Dr. José Jaime Rivera and its outstanding path as President of one of the HETS founding member institutions: Universidad del Sagrado Corazón who is also part of our Executive Committee. During the recently celebrated HETS meeting, the Board and its representatives, recognized President of Universidad del Sagrado Corazón on his retirement and were thankful of his commitment and valuable contributions to HETS during the past years during a special activity at Lehman College in New York.  As part of the HETS family recognition to this extraordinary leader and person, HETS Chariman Mr. Manuel Fernós, Esq. and Executive Director, Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo presented a tailored craftsmanship to him on behalf of the Consortium.   • Summer Board Meeting closes the second year of HETS Strategic Plan. Celebrating our 20th anniversary and with an outstanding attendance of 25 presidents and representatives from our current 41 institutional members; HETS celebrated its summer Board Meeting on June 19 and 20, 2014 in New York. This meeting was hosted by Lehman College. The Board meeting closes the academic year 2013-2014 with positive report on our second year of Strategic plan results, and envisioning numerous new projects for next academic year, including the election of the new Board Officers. Among the news HETS shared with the Board were highlighted the major activities to support the organizational programmatic goals such as: the development of tailored online workshop offerings; additional tools and services added to the HETS Virtual Plaza and also a summary of the 2014 Best Practices Showcase Conference. Other HETS initiatives shared with the Board included; the results of the Online Journal publication, HETS Spanish online workshops and the self-paced online workshops in English offered during fall semester.   • HETS promueve proyecto de transporte eco-amigable para celebrar el Mes del Planeta Tierra. San Juan, Puerto Rico – Demostrando su compromiso con el medio ambiente, HETS anuncia su apoyo al proyecto Coopiloto, la primera iniciativa de transporte compartido (carpooling) en Puerto Rico, con el fin de reducir la huella ecológica de los estudiantes y sus universidades miembros. Para conmemorar el Mes del Planeta Tierra, HETS toma acción y promueve la dinámica de compartir carro entre los estudiantes a través del proyecto Coopiloto, una iniciativa sin fines de lucro que busca mejorar la movilidad ciudadana y convertirse en una alternativa de transporte económica, eficiente, entretenida y ecológica en Puerto Rico. El portal www.coopiloto.net es la única plataforma virtual gratuita para compartir carro en la isla, una forma moderna y segura de pedir pon por Internet, lanzada en enero de 2014. La misión de Coopiloto es conectar conductores (con carro y asientos vacíos) y pasajeros (buscando pon) que viajan las mismas rutas para que compartan carro y ahorren.   • The Inter American University of Puerto Rico announces its 2014 Summer Law Program. The Inter American University of Puerto Rico will host the summer program Immigration, Human Rights and Maritime Law in the Caribbean. The two-week program will take place in San Juan and Vieques, Puerto Rico from July 6 to July 20, 2014. Students will have the opportunity of taking up to 4 credits in Immigration Law, Human Rights and Maritime Law taught by local faculty experts on their fields. The courses will combine class-room and experiential learning, visits to points of interests and guest lecturers. Along with the courses, students will have an exceptional cultural experience. We offer Spanish language instruction and a cultural immersion program at no additional costs. The courses are taught in English and Inter American University is an ABA approved Law School.   • The Department of State of Puerto Rico recognizes the trajectory of President José Jaime Rivera. President José Jaime Rivera was recognized by the Department of State of Puerto Rico (DEPR) for his significant contribution and academic trajectory through a career full of achievements and recognitions. The surprise tribute was presented during UNESCO’s cathedra event held last Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the DEPR Theater. This event brought together leading international speakers, local academic, government and other sectors leaders, who discussed the issue of Social Responsibility of Universities. As part of President Rivera’s recognition and appreciation, the Secretary of State, Hon.   • The 2014 Best Practices Showcase bring together more than 30 universities from Puerto Rico, United States and Latin America. HETS celebrated its Best Practices Showcase: Celebrating Technology Innovation for Hispanic Success in Higher Education during January 16 and 17, 2014. The event was hosted by the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This was the third time that HETS celebrated this important gathering of higher education institutions from Puerto Rico, United States and Latin America to share its best practices and innovative projects for the benefit of the academic community. This year we received more than 30 institutions members and non members of the consortium. The conference opened with an experts panel composed of: Dr. Alberto Acereda, Sr. Strategic Advisor for Educational Testing Services (ETS); Dr. María Ruíz Cediel, Director of Educational Innovation and Technology, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia and Dr. Tito Guerrero, III, Vice President, Middle States Commission on Higher Education.   • Board members gathered to celebrate 20 years of the Consortium as part of the activities of its winter meeting in San Juan. With an outstanding attendance of presidents and representatives from 32 out of 41 institutional members, HETS celebrated its winter Board Meeting on January 16 and 17, 2013 in Puerto Rico. This time the meeting was hosted by the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. This Board meeting closes the first semester of the academic year 2013-2014 and receives 2014; a very exciting year for the organization and its members, as HETS continues to commemorate its 20th Anniversary with envisioned new projects. As part of the festivities of the Consortia’s 20th anniversary celebration, Board members and special invitees gathered at the Department of State of Puerto Rico in Old San Juan in a cultural night on January 15. HETS reevaluated its internet presence and the impact on its members and Latino community that we serve.  The goal of HETS was to move from our current web model to a hosted approach that enhances user experience, ease of content management and provides better information, products, and services to our membership and audience while meeting high standards for consistent design quality, branding and ease of use of our main pages www.hets.org and Virtual Plaza (http://hets.org/virtualplaza/) . In total, all of the HETS’s websites receives a high volume of hits per year and we want the experience to be an appealing one.
