New Assessment trends for Distance Education and Online Learning<\/h2>\n

DR. JOSE JAIME RIVERA, is the President of UNIVERSIDAD DEL SAGRADO CORAZON<\/em> since 1992. Throughout his more than forty two years of experience, he has occupied key administrative leadership positions in Puerto Rico and United States. He has also served as evaluator for accreditation and consultant in academic development, institutional assessment, strategic planning, and accreditation for universities in Puerto Rico, United States, Mexico, Argentina, Switzerland, Spain and, Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivera is active in community and professional organizations. In December 2009, he was re-elected to the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and School.\u00a0 He is THE TREASURER OF The HETS BOARD OF DIRECTORS, member of the Board of Directors of the Historical Foundation of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court, and of the College Entrance Examination Board\u2019s Advisory Group, among other organizations. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities [HACU] President\u2019s Award of Excellence and the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education [AAHHE] Distinguished Leadership Award, among others.\u00a0 Dr. Rivera is a member of professional associations in the fields of Economics and Higher Education, member of the Puerto Rico Academy of the Spanish Language, and a Correspondent Member of the Real Academia de la Lengua Espa\u00f1ola<\/em>. Dr. Rivera holds a BACHELLOR DEGREE in Economics from the University of Puerto Rico (Magna Cum Laude); a MASTER DEGREE in Higher Education Administration from New York University (Summa Cum Laude); and a DOCTORATE in Philosophy in Organizational and Administrative Studies from New York University (Summa Cum Laude).\u00a0 DR. RIVERA\u2019S PRESENTATION provided an overview about ASSESSMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND DISTANCE LEARNING.<\/p>\n

Time on task in the online environment<\/h2>\n

This presentation provides an overview on determining time on task in the online environment. \u00a0Specifically, this presentation provide things to consider when developing an online course to ensure instructional time spent in the online environment equates to instructional seat time in a traditional face to face classroom setting.<\/p>\n

Innovative Uses of Technology in Retention and Authentication on classroom, online and hybrid courses<\/h2>\n

The use of online technologies is prevalent in all delivery methods: \u00a0classroom , online \u00a0and hybrid courses. Similarly, these online technologies are being used for different institutional goals and requirements, such as retention and authentication. The University of Texas at Brownsville has implemented the use of synchronous and asynchronous technologies to reach the retention goals and fulfill also the requirements for authentication.<\/p>\n

\"ReneDuring his 25 year career in higher education, Ren\u00e9 Sainz has coordinated multiple educational technology projects in different management positions. In his current position as Assistant Director of Instructional & Client Support Services (ICSS) in the University of Texas at Brownsville , Ren\u00e9 oversees the ITS departments of Online Learning, Classroom Technologies, Videoconferencing, Video Production and ITS Help Desk. Ren\u00e9 provides strategic vision and leadership in the conceptualization, design and implementation of online and hybrid courses, as well as faculty and student training and support. \u00a0The University of Texas at Brownsville offers over 600 online course sections per year and 17 Fully Online Programs including bachelors, masters and graduate certificates. Ren\u00e9 has participated in multiple academic and technical committees, grants, and national and international projects. Ren\u00e9 has presented in educational conferences, in both English and Spanish, in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Colombia and M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n

Ren\u00e9 holds a M.A. in Spanish and a M.Ed. in Educational Technology and is currently ABD (all but dissertation) candidate of the Doctorate in Education Program. Ren\u00e9 also completed the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Shared Services in the Public Sector Program, the Texas Public Management Program and a \u201cDiplomado\u201d in M\u00e9xico City. He also is Bilingual and Biliterate in English and Spanish at the graduate course level and has served as simultaneous interpreter and translator. Ren\u00e9 has served as Master of Ceremonies for the \u201cMr. Amigo\u201d International Parade between Texas and Mexico \u00a0and has published poetry in Spanish on both sides of the U.S. – Mexico border.<\/p>\n
