After receiving my degree to hope to begin working as a technology-related analyst in higher education or in the healthcare industry. I would like to build a diverse career in the technology field. My goal is to eventually attain a leadership role in a company where I can mange daily operations and information technology.
Please explain what you expect to gain by participating in the H-LTLA
I would like the opportunity to learn from a diverse group of people in higher education. I want to obtain the knowledge that will help me gain the necessary skills to be a leader in the technology field. One of the main reasons I decided to attend CSUSB as a student and continue to work at the university is because it was a Hispanic Serving Institute. It gave me a sense of comfort and confidence because I believed other first-generation students would also attend, so I wouldn’t feel like I didn’t belong. In my current position, I interact with many students and I hope these skills will help me become a better resource to students at our university.

Part VI. Statement of Purpose
1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why?
I believe the top three issues facing higher education are students not feeling prepared to enter the workforce, a lack of access to resources, and the inflexibility of a traditional program. Students might not feel like they are prepared to apply for jobs in their area of interest. I believe students are not able to market themselves during the application process of a professional position. There seems to be a disconnect between the needs of students and university resources. I believe there is a lack of resources that addresses the needs of many students. It’s important to also address the access to these resources because many students are not traditional students. Higher education needs to adapt to the growing needs of the population. I believe higher education serves a diverse group of students that have other responsibilities in addition to being a student. I think this needs to be taken into consideration when creating class schedules and courses.
2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization?
I believe my institution’s main priority is the success of our students. I’m really happy to be a part of a university that holds the needs of our students in the highest regard. A challenge that my university faces is the accessibility to the required technology and the usability of the technology in a course. It’s important to remember that instructional technology shouldn’t be implemented just because it’s new. It has to have a pedagogical purpose to ensure students meet course objectives. Along with the implementation of instructional technology we have to ensure all students are able to access it by making sure they have the right equipment and that it follows ADA guidelines and regulations. I believe a huge challenge we face is buy-in from faculty and staff. Adapting to change is sometimes difficult for people that prefer the traditional face-to-face and textbooks lessons.
3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep?
If I could change one thing at my institution, I would like to increase the online courses for undergraduate programs. Our institution is mostly known as a commuter school. I believe many students would be more willing to continue their education if they have the flexibility to choose between coming to campus or taking an online course. I would like to maintain the level of dedication from staff members. In my experience, you can tell that the university takes into consideration the needs of students. I believe having a dedicated workforce facilitates the adaptation of changes in the university.
