Part VI. Statement of Purpose

1. From your perspective, what are the top three issues facing higher education today? Why?

1. The broad scope of online learning requires vigilance to remain aware of federal, state, and accrediting body rules and the best practices evolving as we gain experience and our students needs or desires change. Leaders in our area need skill, energy, and effective practices to implement new methods to ensure this compliance.
2. We lack the financial support to acquire people and tools for instructional/ curriculum design AND there is a shortage of professionals in this area with the needed skill sets to transform all of our courses/programs.
3. Our work must be measured to ensure alignment to our mission, and data for digital learning must be used to guide our efforts. We need standard KPIs (or some equivalent) to assist here.

2. What are your own institution’s priorities and challenges with regard to leveraging instructional technology and distance education for the benefit of the entire organization?

Our priorities involve converting courses/programs to the appropriate mix of hybrid or distance delivery to meet the needs of our customers while ensuring the rigor and content requirements of each discipline. Our challenges are time, effort, and expertise needed to build quality in the design and delivery of the transformed courses/programs. We seek innovative practices that are sustainable to make this work possible. We are passionate about building learning environments that support our students’ success and we recognize that we cannot continue doing things the way we have traditionally done them.

3. If have the influence to instill change at your Institution, was one thing you could change, what would that be; and what is the unique aspect of your institution you would like to keep?

The Change: I would build the army of people to train and support our faculty to ensure the delivery of engaging course work. The army would require the support of the leadership of our entire organization; everyone must recognize and support (financially and otherwise) what is happening in our classrooms! Our faculty & staff are passionate, however the work load can get heavy, we need opportunities across the board for our faculty and staff to ensure that the learning experience and environment are meeting the needs of our students and the business & industry/community we serve.

Keep: The LCTCS colleges utilize a system-wide instance of Canvas that provides the perfect environment to scale quality practices and delivery. To compliment our LMs environment we have an active committee of eLearning coordinators, each college is represented, where we are able to share best practices and resources to support the improvement needed and scaling to ensure broad impact.
