Article 1Bridging the Gap: Blended Courses in the Business DisciplineAuthor: Christine Mooney is an Assistant Professor at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York. Prof. Mooney is also an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of New York. She has been a member of the faculty at QCC for over ten years teaching a variety of courses in the Business Management area. She also, has served as a faculty mentor of the QCC Fed Challenge Team since the Fall of 2004. She and her colleague have successfully coached their team to two National Community College Finals. Professor Mooney has been recognized for her outstanding work in the field of Elder law where she is frequently appointed by the Court to serve as a guardian to incapacitated individuals. Professor Mooney holds a B.A. and an M.A. from Queens College of the City University of New York. She received her law degree with honors from New York Law School and is a member of the New York State Bar.

Professor Leslie Francis has taught Business Law and Business Management at Queensborough Community College, located in Queens, New York, for four years. Prior to coming to Queensborough, he was an adjunct professor at York College, also located in Queens, New York, for ten years where he taught Business Law. Both colleges are part of the City University of New York. In addition to teaching, Professor Francis is one of the faculty advisors to the school’s mock trial team. The team remains the only community college in the Eastern Regional competition. Professor Francis is currently on the Curriculum Committee for a new early college/high school program to begin in the Fall of 2014. The program is a partnership between Queensborough Community College, NYC Department of Education and SAP AG, a German multinational software corporation. Through a series of grants from New York State, New York City Department of Education and SAP AG, the students of B-Tech will receive a free Associates degree from Queensborough Community College in either Computer Information Systems or Internet Technology and a “first-in-line” opportunity to work for SAP AG or one of its many global partners. Professor Francis is also an attorney admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Connecticut and he is also admitted in the federal court of the United States for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, as well as the United States Bankruptcy Court. He received his J.D. degree from St. John’s University School of Law and maintained his own law office for over twenty years. Dr. Farzaneh Razzaghi has been serving as the Dean of library at the University of Texas- Pan American since 2007. She received her Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies from Texas Woman’s University. She obtained several management training certificates including one on “Women Executive Education” from Harvard University, and “Management Development” from Miami University in Oxford Ohio. She is currently chairing the University of Texas System Library Advisory Board, ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) Research Committee of the Distance Learning Section, and serving as a Board member of McAllen Public Library. Co-authored several proposals for Grants from Texas State Library, NEH and NSF. Member of TexShare Advisory Board, and served as a grant reviewer for Texas State Library and TexShare Continuing Education Committee.

Janette Garcia is the Head of Special Collections at The University of Texas-Pan American Library. She became interested in copyright issues while digitizing archival letters and photographs. She has an interest in patents and innovation, and how current intellectual property laws have developed in the United States. She earned her Master’s Degree in Information and Library Studies from the University of Michigan, and is currently working on a second master’s degree in history

Kelly Leu has served as the Copyright & Scholarly Communication Librarian at the University of Texas – Pan American since January 2012. As the main point of contact for copyright information on campus, she regularly meets with faculty, staff, and students providing assistance with questions. In addition to serving as a co-instructor for the Library’s Copyright & Patents 101 online workshop, she also provides presentations to the campus community throughout the year. She earned her Master of Science in Information Science from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and completed the Copyright Management and Leadership certificate program offered by the Center for Intellectual Property of the University of Maryland University College

Dr. Lisbel M. Correa Suárez is a Curriculum Development Specialist, and the Coordinator of the Center of Innovation and Creativity in Education of the Distance Learning Associate Deanship. She owns a Doctored Degree in Instructional Technology and Distance Education of the Fischler School of Education of Nova Southeastern University, and a Master Degree in Educational Technology of Caribbean University. Dr. Correa also has successfully worked as an online instructor for sub-graduate and graduate Programs, and has also provide exceptional contributions by creating standardized processes for online courses instructional design. She has actively worked as a leader for the evaluation, development and reinforcement of the assessment processes of the Associate Dean of Distance Education. Furthermore, she designed the institutional training program for online instructors; as well as other online courses for sub-graduate and graduate program.

Dr. Tanvir Prince has a Ph.D. in Mathematics and is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Hostos Community College. He is interested in such areas as Topological Quantum Field Theory and Recreational Mathematics. He has recently become very interested in Mathematics Education. He has presented at numerous international and national conferences. He is regularly publishing articles focusing both on pure mathematics and mathematics education in various peer reviewed journals. Dr. Prince is also currently collaborating on projects that aim to expose community college students to mathematical research early in their academic careers. His other interests include traveling and cooking.

Dr. Ruslan Flek received his B.S. in Mathematics from Hunter College of CUNY and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center. While completing his doctoral work he served as an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College and a math learning center supervisor. He received his Ph.D. in 2009, and is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Hostos Community College (CUNY). His pure mathematical interests and areas of expertise include Complex Analysis, Complex Dynamics, General Dynamical Systems and Hyperbolic Geometry. His broader research interests include Mathematics Education, Curriculum Development and the Psychology of Quantitative Reasoning. Vice President of Student Affairs Naydeen González-De Jesús has worked in student services on the community college level for the past decade. She joined Bergen Community College in January 2013 after serving as Burlington County College’s associate dean since 2009. She holds a doctorate in industrial organizational psychology from Northcentral University. Recently, Dr. Gonzalez-De Jesus established a Military and Veterans Affairs Center, a One-Stop Enrollment Services Center, an Admissions Welcome Center, and an improved enrollment management strategy that has yielded recent increases in headcount and credit enrollment. She serves as Institutional Representative for the NJ Women’s Network in Higher Education. Dr. Gonzalez-De Jesus is a National Community College Hispanic Council Fellow, and a member of the National Council on Black American Affairs, a member organization of the American Association of Community Colleges. Her research interests include but are not limited to leadership development, organizational psychology, student success, persistence and retention, and process evaluation and improvement. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian.

Denise A. Longoria is an assistant professor of social work at The University of Texas-Pan American. She holds an MSSW from The University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University. Before joining The University of Texas – Pan American, she was a faculty member at Texas A & M International University. She has been a social worker for over twenty years, and an academician for fourteen. Her areas of interest and expertise include social work practice, family violence issues, and social work education. In addition to teaching social work courses, Dr. Longoria is responsible for recruitment and advising of Laredo students enrolled in the distance education program.
