Breaking with Tradition: Video Games as an Alternative Tool for ESL Instruction in Puerto Rico’s Public Schools.

Kenneth Horowitz has been teaching English in Puerto Rico for over 15 years at both the secondary level and in higher education. With extensive linguistic training in English as a second language (ESL) he has taught at the several local universities. Horowitz has also participated in several federal proposals, such as Title V where he implemented technology into ESL classrooms, and TRIO Student Support Services, where he offers tutoring and guidance to students. Currently, he is teaching at Antillean Adventist University, where he has taught since 2008 and Pontifical Catholic University, Mayagüez, where he has taught since 2002. Horowitz is also in the dissertation stage of his Ed.D in Education in English as a Second Language (ESL). Horowitz enjoys writing, reading about history and science, and spending time with his family.

Master in Plastic Arts of the University of Antioquia and with a Master’s degree in Education and human Development from the University of Manizales; research is a passion that has allowed Ms. Ricuarte to publish and participate at various events both national and international, such as: “Development of content and web design for educational content” at the “III Online Congress of the Cibersociety Observatory” and “Open Knowledge, Free Society – and communicative interactions in a virtual learning environment” in the “Virtual Magazine – Catholic University of the North(http://revistavirtual.ucn.edu.co)” among others.

She’ve  worked with several institutions in the incorporation of IT into the curriculum, educator formation and the development of virtual courses, with all the administrative turmoil it entails in an academic institution, a field of which Ms. Ricuarte have been part of for the last 15 years. Not only involved as a researcher in the fields of e-learning and educational administration for virtual programs, but alsoshe has been a virtual educator for the last 3 years, which strengthens the research and administrative process tha she produces. Teaching is an area that allows a closer look at the technological changes and its impact on society and youth.

Dr. Nieves Angulo is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department and the Coordinator of the Engineering Program. She has a B.A. and M.A. in Mathematics from Hunter College, and a M.S and Ed.D in Mathematics Education from Columbia University. She served as the Deputy Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2001 to 2004. She has also been a member of the Center for Mathematics in America’s Cities at the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Angulo has worked in the development and the implementation of the Dual/Joint Engineering Programs with CCNY since 2002. Furthermore, many joint projects with other senior colleges including NY City Tech has resulted in securing different grants to help develop and advance the engineering field at the college. For example: the NSF (2005) “Bridges to Engineering Success for Transfers”, a NASA (2010) “Achieving Proficiency in Engineering Research and STEM Education Through NASA Initiatives”-(CIPAIR), and a US DoE (2011) “The Alliance For Continuous Innovative Learning Environments in STEM” (CILES). These grants have made possible many activities for the engineering students at HCC such as (i) NASA Day at Hostos on which many NASA scientists from Goddard, Glenn, and Marshall have being invited to the college, (ii) research internships for STEM students during the summer months, (iii) participation of Hostos’ students in the CCNY summer program called Fast Transfer Retention Academic at CCNY (Fast TRACC) which helps students to transfer from community colleges to senior colleges, and (iv) establishing Advanced Training for Engineering Students  which have been a month long workshop to give students the opportunity to work with faculty members to advance in math, physics and chemistry. Furthermore, Dr. Angulo established the engineering club in 2006, which has served as the pivot point for all engineering activities at the college. Dr. Angulo has mentored many students who were awarded internships to Brookhaven National Labs and NASA as a result.

Dr. Dámaris Velázquez Couvertier has been a technology teacher at the Department of Education of Puerto Rico (DEPR) for 13 years. Since 2010, she has been part of the Board of Directors of the Asosiación Puertorriqueña de Aprendizaje a Distancia (APAD). Recently, she has functioned as moderator and member of the Scientific Committee for the Congreso Virtual Mundial de E-Learning 2013 (CVME), worked for several years as a technical support teacher atCursos en Línea (CeL), an online courses program for the high school students of the DEPR. She has also worked as an independent IT consultant and coach for private companies.

Dr. Velázquez holds the degree of Ed.D in Instructional Technology and Distance Education from the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University at Florida, holds a MA in Instructional Design and Educational Technology from Universidad Sagrado Corazón, and a BA in Elementary Education from Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She also obtained the certificate of Virtual Courses Evaluation from the Instituto Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Calidad (CALED) and a certificate of Moodle Platform Manager from the Centro Universitario Haller.

Brenda Ann Camara Walker, has an Ed. D. Curriculum Development and Teaching and an M.A.in Teaching English as a Second Language. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. Currently, she is the College of General Studies Information Technologies Coordinator and the former Computer Assisted Academic Writing and Intermediate English Course Coordinator. Her latest publications are Voices in the Classroom Reveal Teaching and Learning Paths and Fostering Metalinguistic Construction in the ESL Classroom. She has offered numerous workshops and conferences throughout the island and abroad at Higher Education Institutions, Public and Private Schools, TESOL Conventions and Chapter Conferences.   Last presentations given abroad include Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru, Harvard University, CTJ TEFL Brazil, ICDA Dominican Republic, TESOL Convention in Florida and Milwaukee, and in-house guest speaker in Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Curacao.

Dr. Vanessa Irizarry Muñoz has a Ph. D. in Teaching and Learning from New York University and an M.A in Curriculum Development from Michigan State University. She is a Full Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, current College of General Studies’ Assessment Project Coordinator and former English Department Chairperson. She has trained and mentored teachers in the areas of ESL and Bilingual Education in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and New York. In addition to teaching first year college English at various proficiency levels for over 20 years, she has extensive experience as curriculum consultant and external evaluator of teacher certification projects under the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program and NCLBA for the P.R. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education. Juan Meléndez-Alicea is a full professor of the Department of Art, Technology and Innovation at the College of Education in the Rio Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, and a consultant with the Ana G. Méndez University-Virtual Campus. He did his BA and MA at Albany State (New York), his doctorate at the Interamerican University (Puerto Rico) and his advanced studies at the University of Cambridge (England). He is a member of the Board Directors of the Puerto Rican Society of Evaluators.

Dr. Meléndez started with technology in education in 1975, and with distance education in 1985 in a project with the University of the Virgin Islands. He published his first article on distance education in 1990, and published a book on the subject in 1999, and has published chapters in several Latin American books. He has presented on the topic of distance education in Argentina, Aruba , Barbados, Brazil, Colombia , Cuba , Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama and Thailand and United States.

Degrees in mathematical economics – from Moscow Finance University. Author and co-author of five monographs and over 30 articles. Recipient of different grants and awards; among them – Stephen J. Shaw Award for Most Outstanding Paper (Irwin Publishing, USA) and Award for Outstanding Paper in Channels, Retail & Services (Southern Marketing Association of the USA). Teaches courses in Mathematics and Economics. Served as a Member of the Board of Directors and an advisor to government and private companies. Included in the Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. His current research focuses on the development and applications of new methods of environmental analysis including structured input – output models and data envelopment analysis with a perfect object.
