Dr. Ojeda Ayala is a professor at Sacred Heart University since January 1974. She completed her Doctoral degree at Purdue University, Indiana (1984) in Research and Instructional Development. She also has a Master degree in Education Psychology from Columbia University, Teachers College, in New York. Her Bachelor degree was earned at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Her school days were at Public school system of Puerto Rico, which inspire her to engage in the educational process optimization, with emphasis on how technology can contribute to the positive transformation of these processes.

Dr. Ojeda worked with other colleagues on the creation of the first graduate program in Instructional Systems and Educational Technology in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, which was officially established in 1985. She has been President of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology Puerto Rico (ACTE-PR), is a member of the Board of Directors of the Instituto Puertorriqueño para la Paz (Puerto Rican Institute for Peace), member of the Board of Directors of Advancer Local Development, Director of the Department of Education, Graduate Program Coordinator and Director of several federally funded projects related to the integration of technology to educational transformation processes.

She has also been an excellent resource as a consultant in educational program evaluation,program design, instructional design, test development, systems development and
testing program and management audit of tests for the Educational Testing Service. Prepared questions and chaired the Comité de Competencias Profesionales (Committee on Professional Competencies) for the first teacher certification exam administered by the College Board of Puerto Rico. Dr. Ojeda Ayala has also developed several
instructional designs and research for the industry. Research interests are oriented towards the study of cognitive processes mediated by technology and virtual learning environments.

Integrated Learning and the Value of the VALUE Rubrics

Geralyn Marchisello, MSOL is an adjunct professor at Mercy College in the Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) and a part-time Research Associate at Queensborough Community College.  She is also a Personal/Professional Transformational Leadership Coach and Mentor.

Generative thinking, Integration and Reflection are the energies that underline and infuse all of her work. The teachings and information of William James and Bloom’s taxonomy underwrite her approach to teaching and her efficacy of student learning and outcomes achievements.

Interestingly enough, Ms. Marchisello is also a body – mind expert being both a pilates and yoga therapist and finds that the VALUE rubrics – especially the Integrated VALUE rubric – are valuable tools.  Reminding all involved that awareness of what is expected improves ability.

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Queensborough Community College

Michele Cuomo was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York in 2010, after a two year appointment as Assistant Dean following a year spent in the Office of Academic Affairs as a Faculty Fellow. She became a member of the Queensborough Community College faculty in the Fall of 2003, and was promoted to the rank of associate professor in the department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts five years later.

Previous positions included of Head of Acting at The University of Mississippi and Interim Head of Acting at The University of Georgia, where she was also a member of the select Graduate Faculty.

Michele Cuomo earned the B.A. degree in English at the College of New Rochelle, and the M.F.A. degree in Acting at The Ohio State University. She attended the Harvard Institute for Higher Education’s Management Development Program in 2008. She is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a Certified Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and an Experienced Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance. She is a board member of the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association after year of service as an officer. She received one of the first Emerging Leaders Awards from the American Association of University Administrators and an award for Teaching and Technology at the Hispanic Educational Telecommunications Best Practices Conference, both in 2010.

Michele has served as the Principal Investigator for the MDRC Learning Communities Study, as well as the project director for the Queensborough NEA Big Read grant. Leading the operations of the Freshman Academies has focused her inquiry into high impact practices for student success, and she participates as a faculty member in the Student Interdisciplinary Wiki Project, which incorporates global and diversity learning in a virtual learning community using an Epsilen platform. She continues to pursue creative research as a theatrical director and playwright, with most recent performances of her work at the Joyce Soho Theatre and the Theatre for the New City.

Minority Student Access in the Online Environment

Katherine (“Kay”) M. Conway is Associate Professor of Business and Deputy Chair of the Business Management Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College – City University of New York.  Her background spans both corporate and academia, having spent almost a dozen years in the finance industry prior to joining BMCC.  Similarly, her educational background is dichotomous as well, with degrees in both business and education; she holds a Masters in Business Administration and a doctorate in Higher Education, Administration, Leadership and Technology, both from New York University.  A member of the initial cohort that developed online courses at BMCC, she has taught business courses online for more than a decade.  Her research examines community college student access and success and she has published several articles related to immigrant and minority students.

claire wladisClaire W. Wladis, Ph. D.

Associate Professor, Borough of Manhattan Community College

Claire W. Wladis is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.  Her research includes both mathematics and mathematics education research.  She has a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University, an M.S. in mathematical sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York.

Dr. Wladis has published several articles in geometric group theory as well as mathematics education and is currently focusing on educational research projects on online learning, mathematics remediation, and cooperative learning techniques.  She has been teaching online since 2004, and has developed several online courses, including one of the core requirements for the City University of New York Online Baccalaureate program.

Associate Professor/ Deputy Chair, Borough of Manhattan Community College

Alyse C. Hachey is an Associate Professor of Education and Deputy Chair of the Teacher Education Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College—City University of New York.  In addition to her doctorate in Educational Psychology from Columbia University, She holds a M.Ed. in Instructional Technology and Media and a M.A. in Computing and Education from Teachers College, a M.A. in Education from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Elementary Education with Early Childhood Education specialization from Eastern Michigan University.

Currently, she serves as a faculty advisor for eLearning at BMCC-CUNY.  Prior to coming to BMCC, she served as a coordinator of Distance Learning at Teachers College from 2000-2005.  In addition to her previous research and experience in instructional design, she has taught online and hybrid courses at both the graduate and under graduate level for over ten years. She conducts research on online learning and curriculum development for Early Childhood Education.

Reconstructing Spaces for Writing at an HSI: How Blackboard Transforms Student’s Writing Behavior

Beatrice Mendez Newman is Professor of English at the University of Texas-Pan American (Edinburg, TX)—which she thinks is the best job in the universe.  She regularly teaches first year writing courses and also works with preservice English Language Arts teachers in Children’s Literature and Writing Methods classes. She has a life-time Texas teaching certificate in secondary English and Journalism and has taught in local school districts in innovative, collaborative projects that placed college professors in high school classrooms.

She has a book with Pearson/Allyn and Bacon titled English Teacher Certification Exams in Texas, a study guide for the state of Texas English Teacher Certification exams. She has written articles on teaching writing at a Hispanic Serving Institution, on teaching the works of local writers Viola Canales and Rene Saldana, and on teaching writing at the Writing Center.

Most recently, in addition to her publication in the HETS Online Journal, Dr. Newman also has an article on funds of knowledge and the teaching of writing forthcoming in the National Council of Teachers of English journal, Voices from the Middle.  Dr. Newman is very active in NCTE, serving on several of the organization’s key committees.  Additionally, she works extensively with her local public school colleagues in creating innovative, student-centered pedagogy for improving young students’ writing.

El perfil de los estudiantes a distancia en la educación superior de Puerto Rico: Aspectos psicosociológicos, académicos, éticos y legales

Principal Investigator, Dr. Myrna Rodriguez’s doctoral dissertation is:  “The impact of Quality Circles on individual motivation, organizational commitment and job satisfaction in a group of Puerto Rican professors and administrators” (1989). Her professional background goes from teaching graduate level, at Pheonix and Interamerican Universities; to under graduate level teaching in the University of Puerto Rico and American University. She held different positions, such as: Social Science Coordinator, as Counselor in Cooperative Education Program, Coordinator in Continuing Education Program, in the Institutional Research and Planning Office in American University; as Faculty in Social Science Department and as Visiting Adjunct Researcher in the Planning and Research Office in the University of Puerto Rico. Currently she is the Dean of Academic Affairs at Caribbean University, Carolina Campus.

Among her research experience can be mentioned:  Develop and implement the Institutional Assessment Plan at the University of Puerto Rico and American University (to evaluate “value added” knowledge in students and its impact on society), Develop needs assessment instruments, Conducting research and developing strategic plan for institutional accreditation purposes; and for the evaluation of accomplished goals and   objectives, Advising Graduate students follow up research, Implementation of the Assessment Plan in 63 private schools in Puerto Rico, Developing the research design, conducting and reporting the results used in the Formative and Summative Evaluation of the Puerto Rico State Incentive Grant (PRSIG) (2001, 2002,   2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), Outcome Assessment and Evaluation Report, Mountain´s Town Coalition Project (Department of Health and Prevention Programs (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) and Conducting workshops and seminars in Teaching Training Programs sponsored by the Department of Education in Puerto Rico.

Dr. Israel Ramos-Perea, First Research Associate. Since 1988 he is the Institutional Research Director for the Office for Institutional Research and Planning Office, at AmericanUniversity.

He also is retired as full professor and former director of the Department of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Education, in theUniversityofPuerto Rico. His background experience in the University of Puerto Rico goes from  Associate Professor and former Director, in the Department of Social Foundations, Faculty of Education; as Assistant professor and former director, Center for Educational Research; and as Head Advisor, Member Advisory Committees acting in Doctoral Dissertations and Master Thesis in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Planning, Public Administration, Communication, Health Sciences, Community Development and related Social Action programs.

juantitomelendezJuan J. Meléndez, Ed. D.

Professor, University of Puerto Rico

Dr. Juan Meléndez is a professor in the Department of Art, Technology and Innovation, Faculty of Education at the Rio Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). He is also the Resident Professor of Technology and Education of the campus, at its Center for Academic Excellence.

Dr. Meléndez started with distance learning in 1985 on a project with the University of the Virgin Islands. His first article on the subject was published in 1990. Also a book on distance education was published in 1999, and chapters in several Latin American books as well. The last chapter was published in the book El aseguramiento de la calidad en la educación virtual in June 2011.

He completed his advanced studies at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) in 2011, in the area of ​​research and evaluation. Their study was a meta-evaluation of distance learning programs in Puerto Rico.He is Advisor of the Distance Education Program at the UPR and for the University of Aruba and the the Virtual Campus of the Ana G. Méndez University System.  In addition, is the Coordinator of the Center for Educational Innovation of the Faculty of this Campus. Dr. Melendez is the editor of the blog CARTAE and active orator on the Distance Education topic in Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Argentina, United States of America, Barbados, Thailand, Ecuador, England, Mexico and Indonesia.
