The 2021 HETS Virtual Best Practices Showcase will be held from February 4 – February 12, 2021, focused on three main tracks: Innovation, Retention, and Online Learning and Technology Integration. We invite you to save these dates to take advantage of all the presentations of this Virtual Best Practices Showcase. HETS seeks to highlight and celebrate the outstanding work of its member institutions in meaningfully and strategically using technology to achieve Hispanic student success. Where: Virtual Conference (Online). After selecting the proposals, the event Schedule will be published to indicate the combination of live and asynchronous online presentations with forums to interact with presenters and participants.

HETS proudly joins the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Being HETS the first bilingual consortium dedicated to serving the higher education needs of the Hispanic communities, HETS Executive Director has published a short video about the importance of Hispanics and their contributions to the society to join this important festivity. We are pleased to celebrate the history and culture of the U.S. Latino (or Latinx) and Hispanics communities annually, as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month observed from September 15 to October 15. Is important to commemorate how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large. This month it’s also representative of the anniversaries of several Latin American countries’ independence celebration within the 30-day period. Congratulations to all!

We invite you to see the video that emphasize some of the most important contributions and characteristics of the Latinx /Hispanic community that had made them earn the respect and reputation such as their drive to achieve their goals. HETS is constituted by more than 40 higher education institutions in Puerto Rico, United Sates and Latin America. Now more than ever, we provide essential services focused on institutional and student success, as a pioneer organization in the use of technology in higher education with enormous expertise and services ready to be used by our academic communities. HETS commitment will be to continue serving and supporting the capacities of our member institutions to enhance Hispanic/Latino student success and opportunities in Higher Education, and celebrate the results of their accomplishments.

HETS offerings for Fall semester to support its members locally, nationally, and internationally.

This Fall semester, HETS commitment will be to continue providing support and services to its member institutions and academic communities, locally, nationally, and international challenged to offer their courses remotely in this academic scenario. This requires training and skills that allow in these environments to achieve equal results or the same objectives that are achieved in face-to-face courses. As a pioneer organization in the use of technology in higher education with enormous expertise and services ready to be used by our academic communities, HETS announces its offering for the Fall semester that includes the following:

  • Free webinars with HETS Student Ambassadors to promote services free of charge at the Student Placita in the HETS Virtual Plaza, and expert resources in topics like leadership, entrepreneurship, job search, among others.
  • Virtual Student Leadership Showcases in Spanish and English for PR, Latin America, and the US, to reinforce student leadership skills and promote HETS services and tools free of charge for them.
  • More than 10 webinars in Spanish and webinars in English regarding Distance Learning and related topics to support faculty and administrators on this new modality.
  • A Fall Issue, Volume XI of the HETS Online Journal to share articles that offer insights and suggestions that are pertinent to our current environment.

Besides these offerings during this semester, HETS services include tutorials in Spanish and English on how to use technology and access to the HETS Student Placita. Also, access to recordings of pasts free virtual events and webinars, in English and Spanish, focusing on distance learning, which is crucial and valuable in our new academic reality. Likewise, access to more than 100 peer-reviewed articles at the HETS Online Journal, sharing best practices regarding the use of technology for teaching and learning.

Welcome to the Fall 2020 edition of the HETS Online Journal! Like everything in 2020, it’s been a challenge This edition marks the second time that HETS and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) have collaborated to bring you an even more informative Journal. By working together, we can offer a larger variety and number of articles. The HETS Journal recognized the valuable collaboration of Dr. Marcela G. Cuellar from the University of California, Davis, who represented HACU as an invited editor.

As always, the Journal focuses on ensuring the success of Hispanic students in higher education, which is at the core of the missions of both organizations. Many of the articles include the use of technology in student success, while all include information designed to help Hispanic students access higher education and succeed in their studies. In light of the pandemic and all of the other challenges of recent months, learning from the experiences of others has become even more vital. In this edition, you’ll find the following articles:

1- A National Portrait of STEM Trajectories through Two- and Four-Year Hispanic Serving Institutions, explores the undergraduate profiles and outcomes of STEM majors who begin post secondary education at two- and four-year Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).

2- The article, Assessing the Needs and Experiences of First-Generation Students’ Transition to Remote Learning Due to COVID-19 Pandemic at a Hispanic Serving Institution, describes an evaluation research project undertaken to determine the impact that the shift to remote learning has had on first-generation college students’ learning and the challenges that they faced in the process.

3- Estrategias de apoyo a la facultad en tiempos de pandemia: la respuesta de dos instituciones, presents successful strategies that two institutions employed during the rapid transition to remote teaching that was necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

4- La oferta universitaria en línea de Puerto Rico: Actualización a otoño 2020, provides an update of the distance learning offerings at colleges and universities in Puerto Rico and identifies the institutions, disciplines and level of programs offered under this teaching modality.

5- La tecnología virtual: su importancia en la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la contabilidad, explores the use of virtual technology in an accounting course and discusses how it can influence motivation and academic performance.

6- Social Presence: An Imperative in Online Learning Contexts, discusses the role of culture in social presence and how teaching and learning, faculty disposition, and cultural competence can be used to encourage a sense of belonging to an institution.

7- In the article, Student and Faculty Perspectives on Student Evaluation of Teaching: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Community College, the usefulness of Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) is examined from both the student and faculty views, with the goal of making these evaluations more useful for faculty while also providing a better learning experience for students.

8- Teaching Using a Flipped Classroom Approach: Impacts for Students of Color, considers whether the use of a flipped classroom teaching method for undergraduate quantitative research methods had an impact on undergraduate students’ academic achievement, as measured by their performance in course assignments, as well as on quizzes, exams, and the final paper.

9- The Effect of a Kernel Sentence Combining Technique on the Reading Comprehension Levels of Basic English Students at UPR-Cayey, investigates and analyzes the implementation of the Kernel-Sentence-Combining Technique and how it helped Basic English students at UPR-Cayey to improve their reading comprehension levels.

10- The purpose of the article entitled, What are the best practices for online student engagement among Hispanic-Serving Institutions? A narrative review, is to explore how post-secondary education instructors at HSIs can increase learner engagement and improve course retention rates, particularly at a time when many courses within post-secondary institutions are being delivered online.

Se celebra la séptima edición el HETS Student Leadership Showcase con más de 350 participantes

Más de 350 estudiantes se conectaron para participar de la séptima edición del HETS Student Leadership Showcase: Llevando tus metas a otro nivel, el 18 de septiembre de 2020 vía Zoom. Puede ver la grabación del evento en el Student Leadership Showcase bajo el Tab de SLS PR & LA. El propósito principal del evento fue promover la gran variedad de servicios disponibles libre de costo para apoyar las metas académicas de los estudiantes e incrementar las oportunidades de éxito. Como en eventos anteriores, participaron estudiantes de las instituciones afiliadas en Puerto Rico: American University, Atenas College, Colegio Universitario de San Juan, EDP University, Humacao Community College, Ponce Health Science University, National University College, ICPR Junior College, Universidad Ana G. Méndez, Universidad Carlos Albizu, Universidad Central del Caribe, Universidad de Puerto Rico, y la Universidad Interamericana de PR. Además, participaron de otras instituciones invitadas de Puerto Rico y por primera vez participaron estudiantes de nuestras instituciones miembros en México: la Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara y de Colombia: la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia. Acceda aquí la grabación del evento.

El evento comenzó con una cálida bienvenida a los asistentes de parte de la Directora Ejecutiva de HETS, la Sra. Yubelkys Montalvo, quien saludo a los estudiantes conectados y reconoció la presencia de miembros del Comité Asesor e invitó a otros a formar parte. Montalvo explicó que HETS creó el Comité Asesor de Estudiantes con el fin de ayudar a coordinar eventos futuros y a identificar los intereses y necesidades de este grupo para colaborar en la búsqued de soluciones y servicios que los apoyen. También, la Sra. Montalvo presentó los nuevos estudiantes Embajadores de HETS, que comenzaron este año académico y reconoció el apoyo de los estudiantes embajadores del año pasado que siguen sus funciones este año. Para concluir los saludos, la Sra. Montalvo agradeció el apoyo de los auspiciadores: Cape AirOffice Max/Office Depot, Claro de PR, Yosidha Academy, PR Top Level DomainChilis Bar and GrillRomanos Macaroni and GrillP.F. Changs y presentó a la Sra. Mariali Hernández, Gerente del Departamento de Eventos y Auspicios Corporativos del Banco Popular de PR, para dar un saludo como representante del auspiciador principal del evento.

Luego de los saludos, la agenda del evento comenzó con la sección que ha sido constante en los Student Leadership Showcase, la presentación de experiencias de estudiantes de las instituciones miembros de HETS. En esta ocasión, la estudiante Stephanie Pérez de la Universidad Ana G. Méndez de Gurabo presentó el tema: Importancia de los Internados durante la vida universitaria. Stephanie compartió sus vivencias en internados y su rol como embajadora de HETS y explicó cómo tomar ventaja de estas oportunidades.  Continuando con la agenda del evento, el Dr. Pablo Rodríguez, vicepresidente de PR Top Level Domain compartió un breve mensaje con el tema: Tu identidad en Internet. Al finalizar su parte, hizo varias preguntas a los participantes sobre el tema y regaló cinco (5) premios de acceso a un dominio más servicio de Web Hosting para los ganadores.

La agenda del evento continuó con la presentación del orador principal del evento: el Dr. Joe Díaz con el tema: Ser, hacer y tener; Cómo montar mi proyecto de vida con su acostumbrada habilidad y perspicacia. Los participantes mostraron gran interés por el tema y solicitaron que se extendiera el tiempo al Dr. Díaz para abundar más en el tema y continuar   contestando preguntas. El Dr. Díaz es Presidente de Peak Performance, miembro activo del World Future Society, Chairman del Proyecto Market Trends and Social Changes 2020, Investigador líder del proyecto Buying Habits Of The New Generation y es un activo colaborador de HETS.

Concluidas las presentaciones, se realizó el sorteo de regalos cortesía de los auspiciadores del evento. Para iniciar el sorteo, la Sra. Yubelkys Montalvo presentó al piloto Jean Carlos Corales, Line Captain de Cape Air, uno de los auspiciadores del evento. El Sr. Corales habló del programa para pilotos que existe en Puerto Rico en alianza con la Universidad Interamericana, Recinto de Bayamón y regaló durante el sorteo seis pasajes de Cape Air a varias Islas del Caribe. Otros premios del sorteo fueron: talleres de liderazgo de Yoshida Academy auspiciados por el Banco Popular de PR, un Iphone de Claro de PR, tarjetas de regalo de Office Max/ Office Depot y certificados de regalos de Chilis Bar and Grill, Romanos Macaroni and Grill y P.F. Changs, Para clausurar el evento, la Sra. HETS news about the international student’s government policy

Thousands of international students in the U.S. relief of being deported

The Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS), committed to expanding educational opportunities and higher education for the Hispanic community, is pleased to learn about the decision that brings relief to thousands of international students who had been at risk of being deported. More than 1,000,000 international students enroll in the U.S. institutions, based on the 2018-19 academic year data from the Institute of International Education. Hispanic students represent almost 7% of this amount precede by Asia with 70%, Europe and, Middle East/North Africa with 8% each.

“As Chairman of an organization focuses on Hispanics that helps with the integration of technology in education; we praise the legal effort of hundreds of universities to defend international students forced to transfer or leave the country if their schools held classes entirely online because of the coronavirus pandemic” commented by Dr. Carlos Morales, HETS Chair. Under this policy, international students would have been forbidden from taking all their courses online this fall. Besides, new visas would not have been issued to students at schools planning to provide all classes online due to the pandemic. Students already in the US would have faced deportation if they didn’t transfer schools or leave the country voluntarily. “We were proud to stand with our partners in the Hispanic community and sister institutions to challenge ICE’s unconscionable regulations,” said HETS Officer and University at Albany President Havidán Rodríguez. “Clearly, our united voice helped to turn the tide on these unjust rules, which would have brought untold harm to our international students.”

It is a fact that all colleges and universities were forced to move all their classes online to ensure the safety and health of their students, faculty, and administrators. This commitment was reflected in this historical moment, where for the first time, so many institutions seek a legal remedy to protect international students. On this line, HETS officer, Dr. Carlos Vargas-Aburto, President of Southeast Missouri State University comment that: We are thankful to the federal government for having rescinded the initial directive.  This has been a welcome news by both institutions of higher education and international students. Likewise, HETS Regional Representative, Dr. Tomás Morales, President of California State University San Bernardino emphasized that: “This is a reprieve for the over 1 million international students who study in the U.S.  We know that these members of our student body enrich the academic experience and campus life by their presence.”
