The HETS Connection
Volume : 9 - Issue : 1 - OCTOBER 2012

Message from the Chairman of the Board

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this edition of HETS Newsletter. As HETS starts a new year, many challenges and exciting ventures await. These past years have certainly been full of accomplishments, new venues, and growth. This issue demonstrates the progress made by our organization as we continue to make strides in advancing educational opportunities for Hispanic students. Here is a sampling of what we are doing.

Our Online Journal continues to serve as a vehicle for state-of-the–art articles about the use of technology in the teaching and learning of our student population. Please go to http://www.hets.org/journal/ to review our latest issue. The Fall issue of the Online Journal will be published by the end of this month, please help us to disseminate this peer reviewed publication, now that has been nominated for EBSCO databasess.

In addition, the HETS Second Best Practices Showcase that took place on February 16-17 was a resounding success! After this one, the HETS Board of Directors approved to have a Virtual Best Practices Showcase in January 2013. The Call for Proposals on the Retention and Assessment efforts in Distance Learning, Equivalence, and Authentication in Distance Learning Education for Hispanics tracks is open until October 26th, 2012.

HETS's growth will continue steadily throughout years to come, as the Consortium will soon begin implementing its next strategic plan. Recently, the Board of Directors elected a new group of Board officers. This will bring many new opportunities for the Consortium, as changes in leadership bring along new insights, experiences, and resources.

We continue to grow as an organization. Our membership now includes three new institutions: Eastern Washington University in Washington State, ICPR Junior College in Puerto Rico, and Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga in Colombia. Our corporate partners are invaluable in helping us connect with the business community, so we welcome Grupo Parada, LLC. as new Major Partner. I believe that we can use our membership as a mechanism to amplify the message that our population is deserving of the most advanced technological advancements.

As you can see, there is much that is taking place within HETS and, there is much more to do!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I welcome you to this issue of the HETS Connection, enjoy!

Manuel J. Fernós, Esq.
Chairman of the HETS Board of Directors
President, Interamerican University of Puerto Rico
