  • Campus visits to promote the Virtual Plaza HETS Services available free of charge to member institution’s community To reinforce internal relations and increase member’s involvement, the HETS Executive Director has visited various campuses to promote HETS free of charge services. These visits had the purpose to communicate HETS commitment to better serve its member institutions, and explore new collaborative liaisons. More than 350 community members (including Presidents, Chancellors, Deans, Directors and faculty members) have been informed of HETS services and benefits during the campus visits in February, 2013. So far, with a combination of face to face and video conferences we have completed: three sessions at Universidad del Este (AGMUS), two sessions at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, two sessions at EDP University (Hato Rey and San Sebastián campuses), two sessions at Carlos Albizu University (San Juan and in Florida campus through video conference), one video conference to Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga in Colombia, and one session at: ICPR Junior College, Universidad Metropolitana (AGMUS), and Universidad Central del Caribe.  Future sessions have been scheduled during March to Huertas Junior College, Caribbean University and Universidad del Turabo (AGMUS).   • Partnership between HETS and Oracle Academy to expand academic offerings to college students HETS and Oracle formalized an alliance in February 2013 in order to expand academic offerings for students interested in careers related to Information Systems. This partnership also allows integration of up to date courses on information systems for students and coordination of certified trainings and educational events for the staff of educational institutions affiliated to HETS. “This alliance with Oracle Academy program helps us fulfill our mission to enhance, support and promote the capabilities of our member institutions, in order to expand opportunities for Latino student success in higher education through the many courses and tools that Oracle Academy provides to prepare students and faculty for one of the most demanded careers nowadays” said Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo, Executive Director HETS Consortium.   • EDP College becomes EDP University HETS wants to congratulate EDP University of  Puerto Rico, one of its 38 member’s institutions, in their recent announcement of its name change. The announcement was accompanied by the opening of a gallery that highlights the most important moments of the institution since its inception in 1968 to the present. “In this installation you can see the vision my father had since the beginning of EDP: it was a university that would open the door to all Puerto Ricans and that would meet the need for trained personnel in the information technology area, formerly known as processing data”, said engineer Gladys Nieves, President of EDP University, who is also part of the HETS Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.   • Board members receives 2013 with new members and prepared to celebrate 20 years of the Consortium. With an outstanding attendance of presidents and representatives from 23 out of 36 institutional members, HETS celebrated its winter Board Meeting on January 17 and 18, 2013 in Puerto Rico. This meeting was hosting by the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus. This Board meeting closes the first semester of the academic year 2012-2013 and receives 2013; a very exciting year for the organization and its members, as HETS’s commemorates its 20th Anniversary and envisions numerous new projects.   • HETS presents its 2013 Visionary Leadership Award to Manuel J. Fernós. The HETS Board of Directors, presented to Manuel J. Fernós, HETS Chairman and President of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) the HETS 2013 Visionary Leadership Award. This Award recognized President Fernós 13 years of outstanding commitment and support to HETS initiatives and the education in general. Dr. José J. Rivera, HETS Treasurer & President of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón,  and Ms. Yubelkys Montalvo, HETS Executive Director, presented the Award to President Fernós, during the Opening Session of the HETS Virtual Best Practices Showcase, celebrated last Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Theater of the Inter American University Metropolitan Campus.   • HETS opens new sessions of the online workshops, also accepting articles for it’s Online Journal. With the new academic year, HETS is ready to present new projects targeted to our members and general public.  New sessions of the completely online HETS Basic Certification: Integración de nuevas tecnologías en la Educación Superior will start August 27 and the deadline to submit articles for consideration to be published on the Fall Edition of the HETS Online Journal is September 14, 2012. Our workshops will be validated with 12 contact hours, and at the end of the 4 workshops series, participants will get a total of 4.8 continuing education credits. These workshops will be offered in Moodle or Blackboard online platforms. During these workshops, each participant will have the personalized assistance of experts from some of our Member Institutions in respective topics.   • Distance Learning Directors Event Video is available at the HETS You Tube channel   The video recording of the HETS  Distance Learning Directors event has been uploaded to our You Tube channel.  This event took place at Bronx Community College on June 26, 2012. During the event, several HETS member institutions had the opportunity to discuss relevant topics on access, retention and assessment related to distance learning.  Round table discussion  included representation from: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Lehman College (New York); Berkeley College (New York and New Jersey); Caribbean University, EDP College, National University College Online, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (PR); and Kutztown University (Pennsylvania).   • New Executive Committee elected during summer 2012 Board Meeting at New York   President of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Manuel Fernós, Esq., was elected new HETS Chairman during the annual summer Board Meeting celebrated at Bronx Community College, NY on June 25-26, 2012. Collaborating with Fernós in the HETS Board of Directors will be President of the Ana G. Méndez University System, Dr. José F. Méndez and Dr. José Jaime Rivera, President of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, who were both re elected to their positions as Vice President and Treasurer respectively. Dr. Ivonne Chirino- Klevans, from Walden University, was elected as first ever, Vice President representing members’ institutions from mainland. Other board officials elected includes: Dr. Dario Cortés, President of Berkeley College as secretary; Eng.   • HETS and Blackboard promote innovation in education during the Puerto Rico Teaching & Learning Forum 2012 Blackboard (Bb) and the HETS Consortium celebrated last May 23rd a full day with educational and technology leaders in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean at the Blackboard Teaching & Learning Forum 2012 in Puerto Rico.  The event was hosted by the Metropolitan University, Ana G. Méndez University System, San Juan, P.R.   • HETS and Major Corporate Partner, Blackboard, joined forces offering a workshop to Bb Forum participants in Colombia. As part of the agreement with one of our Major Corporate Partners, Blackboard Inc (Bb), HETS had the opportunity to continue its collaboration to Higher Education Institutions. Last April 26, HETS delivered a workshop focused on design and evaluation of learning modules, and the use of rubrics in Blackboard’s 9.1 grade center, as part of the post activities of the latest Bb Forum held in Bogotá, Colombia.
