  • Distance Learning Directors Event Video is available at the HETS You Tube channel   The video recording of the HETS  Distance Learning Directors event has been uploaded to our You Tube channel.  This event took place at Bronx Community College on June 26, 2012. During the event, several HETS member institutions had the opportunity to discuss relevant topics on access, retention and assessment related to distance learning.  Round table discussion  included representation from: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Lehman College (New York); Berkeley College (New York and New Jersey); Caribbean University, EDP College, National University College Online, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (PR); and Kutztown University (Pennsylvania).   • New Executive Committee elected during summer 2012 Board Meeting at New York   President of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Manuel Fernós, Esq., was elected new HETS Chairman during the annual summer Board Meeting celebrated at Bronx Community College, NY on June 25-26, 2012. Collaborating with Fernós in the HETS Board of Directors will be President of the Ana G. Méndez University System, Dr. José F. Méndez and Dr. José Jaime Rivera, President of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, who were both re elected to their positions as Vice President and Treasurer respectively. Dr. Ivonne Chirino- Klevans, from Walden University, was elected as first ever, Vice President representing members’ institutions from mainland. Other board officials elected includes: Dr. Dario Cortés, President of Berkeley College as secretary; Eng. Gladys Nieves, President of EDP College; Dr. Carole Berrotte Joseph, President of Bronx Community College; and Dr. Carlos Vargas, Provost from Kutztown University as regional representatives.   During the meeting, the Board discussed HETS’s achievements during the past year, and explored a series of key priorities for the years to come, including the HETS Best Practices Showcase in combination with a Virtual Showcase.   • HETS and Blackboard promote innovation in education during the Puerto Rico Teaching & Learning Forum 2012 Blackboard (Bb) and the HETS Consortium celebrated last May 23rd a full day with educational and technology leaders in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean at the Blackboard Teaching & Learning Forum 2012 in Puerto Rico.  The event was hosted by the Metropolitan University, Ana G. Méndez University System, San Juan, P.R.   • HETS and Major Corporate Partner, Blackboard, joined forces offering a workshop to Bb Forum participants in Colombia. As part of the agreement with one of our Major Corporate Partners, Blackboard Inc (Bb), HETS had the opportunity to continue its collaboration to Higher Education Institutions. Last April 26, HETS delivered a workshop focused on design and evaluation of learning modules, and the use of rubrics in Blackboard’s 9.1 grade center, as part of the post activities of the latest Bb Forum held in Bogotá, Colombia. March 5, 2012 | Jerón­imo Domínguez, vice provost of Extended Uni­ver­sity at the Uni­ver­sity of New Mex­ico, has been selected to receive the Dis­tance Learn­ing in Higher Edu­ca­tion Award, pre­sented by the Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of His­pan­ics in Higher Edu­ca­tion (AAHHE) at the AAHHE 7th annual con­fer­ence in Costa Mesa, Calif.   • More Than 25 Higher Education Institutions gathered in the HETS Best Practices Showcase Conference in San Juan   Last February 16 and 17, the Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS) Consortium (HETS) celebrated its 2012 Best Practices Showcase: Celebrating Innovation in Access, Retention, Assessment, and STEM Education to Promote Hispanic Student Success in Higher Education. The Conference took place at the Law School of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. “This is the second time the HETS Consortium gathers more than 25 higher education member institutions from Puerto Rico, United States and Latin-America, to share their innovative initiatives and best practices in the integration of technology and education for the benefit of the academic community”, said HETS Executive Director Yubelkys Montalvo. Through 35 presentations by faculty and administrators from Hispanic Serving institutions, HETS celebrated the innovative use of technology to promote Hispanic student success in the areas of Access, Retention, Assessment, and STEM education in postsecondary education.   • Board of Directors celebrating technology innovation in meeting during the HETS 2012 Best Practices Showcase.   The HETS Board of Directors Winter session was successfully held in San Juan, PR during the HETS 2012 Best Practices Showcase.  Representatives of more than 25 member institutions from Puerto Rico, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Colombia, were present at the meeting and agreed on the priority activities for the next semester. The first session took place, Wednesday, February 15 at the Conrad Hotel as part of the series of events scheduled previous the Best Practices Showcase Conference.  A second session was held on February 17, to discuss initiatives and future plans between HETS Board members and its Corporate Partners at the Law School of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Besides allowing the discussion of the key accomplishments of the organization during the first half of the 2011-2012 academic year, this meeting was crucial in the open discussion of the approved Strategic Plan of the organization from 2011 through 2016.   • More than 35 outstanding proposals evaluated to be considerated part of the HETS Best Practices Showcase. We are delighted to share that our original goal of 28 proposals has been surpassed, since we received more than 35 outstanding proposals for evaluation. As of today, we have confirmed 30 presentations among the four tracks, for the two day event. A second phase of evaluation has been initiated in order to select the final Best Practices presentations that also will be part of this event.
